I got the same spam on my icq as well and this is what happened. I asked who he was and he politely told me who he was as well as who I was (an affiliate of Dating Gold). And it was left at that, he didn't call me nasty names for not knowing who he was, he just told me that he was an employee of Dating Gold and that this was about higher payouts.......... not once did he get nasty with me.

Take to heart, I don't and didn't know him and still don't that well, so it isn't like I am defending a friend here, but the guy was very nice to me when I asked who he was.

It's actually not uncommon at all for SOME sponsors to hit their affiliates on ICQ, I have probably 4-5 that do this and some from bigger programs, so it isn't out of line to me at all. They only alert me when there has been an important change, and I respect this because a lot if times I don't have time to check for news on them.

lying? Can you not read "just an example" my post had nothing to do with you. You lied in your original post but I've already addressed that.

detoxed, thing about the time you would have saved if you have talked nice to Zorgman from the start and told him that you was sorry he consitet it as spam and you would delete him from further icq messages from you.

If he would have nicely asked that may have happened. He still to this minute has not asked not to receive another ICQ.

This dude is a lost fucking cause. It's only a matter of time before his boss realizes it and tells him to carry his ass.

I know of at least 2 people that don't fuck with Dating Gold because of him and I'm sure there are others.

basschick 11-17-2003 01:01 AM

after over 7 years, we've signed up for more than 50 programs and i've never received an icq update like that from a sponsor. what's more, i have signed up for programs i haven't promoted in years, and i wouldn't like to have them all icqing me.

what's more, just because someone ELSE acts unprofessional doesn't make you look more professional when you call them an idiot.

when there is a misunderstanding and someone takes the time and patience to set it right, that is what i consider professional behavior.

He don't need to ask. You know he don't want your messages.

Still, you send the message and he replied, so you should have offered Zorgman a remove and a apology from the start.

Then you feel you get a spam icq message, do you tell them nicely to stop icq you?

Dildozer 11-17-2003 01:04 AM

If there's one thing i know about Zorgman, it's that he's not an idiot. He's a smart, hard working guy. When zorg usually posts on board he posts something meaningful or usefull.

Now let's look at detoxed's posts: classy one-liners such as:: go back to mcdonalds, you're an idiot, etc etc...

If i was a sponsor, he would be the last person i would consider hiring, let alone let him handle webmaster relations.

Is he an account rep for a sponsor?

DatingGold 11-17-2003 01:09 AM

My theory is if you don't want to be contacted by your sponsor via ICQ then don't give it to them.

But maybe some of us don't understand that.

EX-actly. The best programs out there are those whose admins and reps maintain a level of professionalism when dealing with affiliates, at ALL times. Of course something like a death threat is different, but there again, there are ways of handling it that don't make you look like complete arrogant mental case. Be nice, be professional, and let a lawyer do your talking when things get out of hand.

So because I became an account rep AFTER I had my GFY account for personal use I am supposed to change my opinions? Right. Go vote against freedom of speech or something and quit hassling me.

you put your icq # on the affiliate form in order to be contacted for business issues having to do with that specific sponsor. What did you expect? Flirting online or cybersex? You were rude on first place and you got proved wrong.

You are totally right... but I think this is more about the "your an idiot" reply than the general usage of ICQ.

No, but once you become a representative of a sponsorship, a company, one really should put aside the attitude when dealing with such things as affiliates. Talking smack on GFY on your own is one thing, but while representing the program, well, it's only my personal opinion, take it or leave it, your choice.... but I would definitely focus more on keeping some distance, focus and perspective, and staying out of pissing matches with affiliates.

I'll tell you right now, I currently deal with over 40 sponsors, and if I had the same sort of exchange with one of them as you had with zorgman I would drop them as well.

Correct.

However, if I had replied with something like "Thanks for the spam, but I don't make much money with them" and you retorted back with "You're an idiot" you bet someone would hear about it. If that is what happened man, you really should stop taking admin lessons from Kman and start looking to guys that handle this type of thing with finesse.

No one except me and Zorgman know how the ICQ's really went. My reply was friendly and in a joking around tone. He got too serious too fast.

Affiliates need to check themselves before jumping the gun when talking to admins as well. I know several admins of various sponsors who tell me regularly the shit they deal with from affiliates. Everything from accusations to demands to outright stupidity. Even I am sometimes amazed that these people hold it together and keep a level air of professionalism, but most of them do.

Honestly, if I ran a program I would not want any rep of mine talking too much smack on threads involving company issues. Again, that's just me though.

Sparky 11-17-2003 04:41 AM

I also get messages from sponsors, but I think the difference here is that they usually start by telling me who they are and from what company they come from, try it next time it might help ...
