Your post is totally wrong of waht some have said in here, this has nothing to do with parenting skills as far as sex and drugs and alcohol go.

Some of us pay extra to live in a small town community where the schools are rated #1 in the state, the violence and crime are very minimal due to the IYC Prison being here (yes the one Mike Tyson was in), Indiana Boys School and not to mention the Indiana State Police Academy.

But even in a community as such that I live in there is still going to be your pothead 7th graders and your cussing 4th graders and that curious 8th-9th grade teens that want to play I'll show you mine if you show me yours game.

Protect your children to your best ability but don't smoother them and your kids will turn out just fine!!!!

Well I don't think letting a child cuss and being exposed to it, is the same thing. Like I wouldn't let my child drink coffee, because it's an adult thing but I would drink it in front of them. Kids are not as stupid as people think they are. Good parenting and teaching kids right from wrong, goes way beyond "watching your language". If you are a good parent otherwise, you're children will know when they can or can't do something and if they make a mistake, that's when you teach them the right thing.

Most kids know foul language is for adults... I don't see an epidemic of kids going around cussing uncontrollably. (yet) I never cussed in front of my parents, but I started cussing around my friends probably when I was like 10. I knew when I could and when it wasn't appropriate. It's the parents responsibility to teach kids about common sense more than anything else.

:1orglaugh Oh please... you need to travel more... We get cursing and nudity on TV here anytime during the day... and I would bet alot of money that kids swear less here that they do in the states... Second.. its not because it will be tolarated that you'll ear "Fuck" 10 times in your favorite familly sitcom! However... you'll be able to hear people talk on talk shows without the bleeping sound like we dont know when the hell they said!! Oh btw... dont you find hypocritical to see adult theme shows with violence and sexual situation but God forbid... they will never go as far as saying "fuck" or "shit" !!??? :1orglaugh

So basically its ok for them to say it in their daily routine. I am not a parent yet, but I know it?s impossible to monitor your kids constantly. So kids know they are not supposed to say it when they are around their friends but do anyway because they can?t get caught. But I suppose if kids hear it all the time on TV that it?s ok to say it all the time. I am not worried about the language; I am more worried about showing sex on TV and them being susceptible to everything in the adult word. It?s just going to make jobs harder for parents because they have to monitor everything on the TV before your kids sit down in front of it. Don't tell me you can monitor everything your kids watch or do.

So they say the word fuck when they aren't around me, when they are with their friends....... so they might say the word shit...... so fucking what, man. At least they aren't picking up guns, playing with them or having sex with everything they see on the streets. My kids don't do drugs and they aren't violent or mean spirited. In fact, I have had teachers call me to tell me what charming personalities they have. So apparently MY saying the word fuck, shit, damn, or whatever isn't hurting them in their day to day lives.

I teach my kids to respect others FEELINGS, their opinions, and their space, and to respect themselves and keep in mind they are human too. I don't teach them that if they say the word fuck, that they are going to hell, jail or otherwise be idiots. MY life isn't so shallow that I believe that they don't screw up when I am not around, BUT I have very open communications with my kids and they tell me themselves when they fucked up, I don't hear it from others.

For example, my oldest, who is now 19, told us HERSELF that she had tried pot and didn't like it, wasn't the thing for her and so on.... I didn't have to go bail her out of jail, she tried it, didn't like it and didn't do it again.

This may come as a REALLY bad thing on my part where some are concerned, but I TEACH my kids to think outside the box, I don't want to shelter them and completely guard them from the outside world...... why? Because THAT is the very thing I am trying to teach them to DEAL with, is what's beyond my front door. The BEST thing I can do is teach them about it and let them always know that no matter what happens to them, I am here...... to help them, guide them and shelter them when I can. BUT if they are going to do something, they HAVE to know there are consequences and nothing is ever free..... so many I see now want to shelter their kids from what's outside their front door and THOSE are the kids that you see picking up a gun to shoot someone because they simply pissed them off........ the ones that get divorced at the drop of a hat because "Oh my marriage must be over because we had a fight and my mom and dad NEVER fought"..... PLEASE!!

TEACH THEM TO DEAL WITH THE WORLD AROUND THEM!!! NOT to be scared of it!

No I am not the best mom in the world, but I have 4 VERY well adjusted and happy kids that haven't a violent bone in their bodies and DO respect their elders and others around them.

tootie 11-15-2003 12:56 PM

My parents allowed me to watch the Blue Lagoon when I was 5-6 years old. It had nudity and sexual situations in it but they thought it was a valuable movie for me to see. My mother's friends at work flipped out when she told them she'd let me watch it, but she defended her decision and I think I'm all the better for it.

I also monitor my kids television and internet. They watch mostly Cartoon Network, Toon Disney, Animal Planet and Nickelodeon. But I do also let them watch movies after I've screened them first. They've seen movies with some violence in them like Spiderman and Daredevil, but I do make them leave the room if something sexual comes on if they've walked in while we're screening something. Like I would not allow them to see the Neo/Trinity sex scene in the Matrix Revolutions, for example, so they have not seen that movie at all.

I'm for free speech, and we can't take away that right just because some parents can't or won't take responsibility for what their children watch. :)

EXACTLY!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

My kids damn well know if they come at me cussing at me or disrespecting me on any level using ANY words, they have HAD it......not because the government says so, but because I damn well say so. LMAO

It's so damn easy to sit them in front of a tv or computer, but it's damn sure not easy to KNOW them and TEACH them...... but it's my JOB and I take it as seriously, if not more so, than I do making the money to pay the bills to keep them fed and housed.

On the absolute FLIP side of this....... I was not allowed to watch ANYTHING on tv from the time I was 9-17 that wasn't Saturday morning cartoons or Disney. My step mother did her level best to shelter us from EVERYTHING on TV....... BUT, I was physically abused as a child by my dad and emotionally abused by my mother and step mother. THAT is where I learned my violence and anger, NOT from TV and Radio, because I wasn't allowed to watch the shit.

Yes I have calmed down A LOT, but I do still show signs sometimes of a very violent temper and I rage at the drop of a pin, especially if it is something I am passionate about, but I didn't get it from TV and Radio.

I GOT IT FROM MY OWN HOME!! THAT is what was taught to ME! It takes a constant conscious effort for me to hold my temper in check and not rage, my husband is a HUGE part of helping me deal with this, but I deal with it and the choices I make now as an adult are my own to make. He is my backup and level head when I can't handle it on my own. If not for him, I'd be shit.......... and yes I can say this in all honesty because it's HIS patience and hard work supporting me that has helped me deal with it. HE wasn't lazy where I was concerned.

TaraD 11-15-2003 01:33 PM

Tam I know how you feel i grew up in a very christian like home but yet my parents used a little more discipline that they should have meaning closed fists etc till my mom got help as she was a abused child as well. This made me very angry and I tend to have a bad temper and keep myself in check as well.

Am I the only one that thinks this is made up? I mean, why isn't this in the media at all? You'd think if something like this was really decided, we would hear about it on the news. Or at least on a news website.

hmm....

imJason 11-15-2003 02:59 PM

I think its ok on TV,

all tv shows have parental controls and age recomendation ratings, and are label if they have bad lanaguage,

so its ok with me,

radio on the other hand should stay regulated, like it is, in my my book,

regulate the radio,
keep tv somewhat ok, but with filters,
and leave the internet wild and crazy and keep the kids of it,

thats the solution

WHY? you might ask, because that the society standard thats what people want and expect, they expect porno and trash online, and they expect the radio to be borring,

I hate censorship, but im all for standards that make sense,

SomeCreep 11-15-2003 03:04 PM

TV late on weekends = porn

LadyMischief 11-15-2003 03:15 PM

Let me expand a little..my kids are small, 3 and 5, and I don't want them running around parroting those words.. (then again I doubt I would ever have the tv on a channel where they would hear that, but flipping through or something who knows it might happen). We do not use foul language around our children, we don't allow other people to do so. I don't feel that as sheltering so much as trying to set a good example about what's rude or not. They HAVE heard those words, and we have explained to them why they are not acceptable.. But hearing them on tv... well that would be pretty crummy. Maybe that's just me though.
