What can you do on your PC that you cant on Apple?

I'm STRONGLY considering buying one now...

Are there any apps or anything that you mac users miss on your PC?

What are your major complaints with Apple computers?

I can't really think of anything that I'll completely miss I guess... but you apple guys know whats what.

The only thing that I can't do on my Mac that I can do on my PC is run that various webmaster utilities, ie. my autosubmitters.

I suppose you could run Virtual PC, but I've never had much luck with that program. Microsoft owns VPC now, so I'm not sure what the status of that program is anymore.

Being a gamer, it'd KILL me not being able to play all of the new PC games that come out. Sure, they do port some over, but it's usually months after a game comes out.

I've got both and I can say that besides games there not much you can't run on a mac that you can on a pc and vice versa. My main platform of choice is Linux but I have a Windoze box handy all the time and all of my laptops are Mac. I can get anything done on all three of them any time. There is no such scenario when I say "Oh, I have to use this machine because I can only do this specific task on it" (besides gaming that is which I don't do much of). For example, I use Mozilla for web browsing and its supported on all three platform. I can sync my bookmarks between machines no problem. I would say go with whatever you feel comfortable on. These days you can do pretty much everything on any platform. The only thing you should look into is ease of use. You can burn and edit DVDs on a Mac real easy. You can do the same on a Windows box but just not as easily as on the mac (at least I think not because I've never tried doing it on a Windows box). On the other hand I prefer the Windows Style explorer to Mac's Finder. Again, it's just a matter of your own personal peference.

Nope. Most cracks are small Windows apps, if I'm not mistaken...you won't even be able to run them on the Mac. But there are plenty of "Serialz" for Mac programs as well.

Are there specific companies that you can't find serialz for (ie Adobe, Macromedia...)?

i've actually been looking for a suitable outlook replacement for xwindows. not really had much luck lately. i've got a few years' worth of email, and a lot of business-related email i reference fairly often, so i want something that can work fairly seamlessly with a .pst.

but with the prices of pcs today, why not both? keep a pc around for games and "just in case".

Outlook has always been on the mac I don't know what you're talking about. OS X doesn't have Outlook because we have MS Entourage which is just Outlook with a lot more features, but I always used Outlook and can still access it from classic anytime I need to or boot into OS 9 and use it.

MS desktops are most of the market! The reason to use a PC in this biz is cause that's what your surfers are using! Web pages look different depending on OS platform etc. Things are different on AOL too - the browser used changes the way a site looks.

So to be smart, check on multiple platforms, but I'd stick to a PC for a desktop workstation. A MAC has differnet font sets (ya can have more characters on a MAC for example).

If you're doing graphics design for print, of course the MAC is the platform of choice. That's the industry standard there. I think MAC is ahead of the PC on color management esp in the apps like photoshop, Illustrator etc.

Having used MAC, PC and Linux - I can tell ya there are advantages to all three.

Gee if you're a TGP, checking galleries, don't ya wanna know when a gallery has a PC type virus or does the crash on the PC, but not the MAc. The same would apply to any web development.

right-clicking and games.

Right-clicking is such a simple thing, yet so useful and simple.

also, like someone above said, if you do any kind of developement, you really should be on the plateform most of you users will use.
Just common sense.

I've been using Evolution. It's an Outlook clone for *nix (meaning it runs on Mac too). I've been using it for over a year now and I'm liking it. It doesn't support .pst files so you need to extract your mailbox from a .pst file and then transfer your mail over to Evolution. The easiest way to do this is to import your .pst file into Mozilla mail and then export it out as an mbox or maildir. There's a HOW-TO floating around on the net that I've read about this. I can dig it up if someone needs it.

as far as evolution goes... that's ximian, right? i've taken a look at that, and it seems fairly cool. does it have an export feature, like the .pst file, to backup all the mail and folders relatively easily? that's the *nix program i've been most interested in.

most of my experience with other mail programs is they don't import pst's very well. i haven't tried mozilla in a long time tho, i'll have to check that out.

It's good to see that in 2003 there are still tons of misconceptions that are just flat out wrong about macs.

I know where adult webmasters can find the answer if they are looking for it, just look around. Right click your mouse and open a new window and go there even.

xp pro is reliable, 2000 pro is almost reliable.

the only problems i've had with xp have been pretty much all hardware issues. which has nothing to do with the operating system.

Exactly. The bullshit standard response of 'no right click' illustrates very well how little some people think. I've been using my PB with a razor boomslang for 2.5 years. My wife uses a 3 button mouse on her imac. Most of my friends who went back to Apple also use multi button mice.
