      Jobs

Gates' success has been more luck than brilliance.

Jobs because unlike windows there is always something new and interesting from Apple.

        Take Luck!

Most of his "luck" was in DOS becoming the standard PC OS, which didn't come about as a result of his brilliance, but rather luck.

I'm not saying the guy is an idiot, he's a great business man and could kick my ass in chess or poker any day I'm sure, but he's not the creative person that Jobs or Wozniac are/were, and I'm not a big Apple fan. Jobs and Wozniac were the real innovators and creators.

Microsoft didn't even create DOS, they just bought it, and they lucked their way into their deal with IBM in the early days.

All of Microsofts success since then has been based on buying their way into different software niches. Success is a lot easier when you have billions in the bank to ensure you get there.

Gates does have luck, but also business sense. Jobs has creative skills, and is willing to take a financial hit to make good products. Windows is ubiquitous because
because MS has good marketing and a large code base of applications. MacOS
has long been the platform of choice
for creative people. In some cases
not even because their chosen application ran better on a Apple, but purely for ease
                    of use of the platform.

To answer the question, you need to define brilliance. Is it the ability to make money? Or the ability to create?

Jobs gets my vote, AND my money.

He may have had some lucky breaks, but no one "lucks" into the position Gates is in today.....Period!

Are you aware of how DOS became the standard OS? Luck.

If it wasn't for DOS becoming the standard OS, Microsoft would never have had the chance to become what it is today.

It wasn't Gates' brilliance that orchistrated DOS becoming that standard. It was luck that IBMs original deal to licence CP/M from Digital Research didn't work out and IBM came looking around for another OS. Gates has admitted that he wasn't even originally interested in providing an OS to IBM when they first came looking for one.

Opportunity fell into his lap, it's not like he planned it. Please explain the brilliance in this?

There is no such thing as luck.

If you think one or even 10 "lucky" breaks can make a man become the richest man in the world for decades and can allow him to control the OS, office, browser, and countless other software markets in a hypercompetitive industry competing against the likes of Jobs, Ellison, etc, then you are a fucking idiot.

No, he cut the deal with IBM and made sure he had the right to sell it to others... That was brilliant part...

So, I guess the guy who spend years writing DOS and got 50k for all his years of hard work was more brilliant than Gates who just bought it up, and to date got about 60BILLION for it....

Labret said it best when he described GFY as a board full of sycophants.

If anyone should be the one calling Gates brilliant, it should be me since I'm a former Microsoft employee. But I don't consider him brilliant, I consider him a good business man. There is a difference IMO. I don't consider the business deals that Microsoft has done to be "brilliant", I consider them to be good business. They see an opportunity and they take advantage of it, just as all good businesses do. It's just good business, not brilliance.

I'm not attacking Gates' accomplishments, I'm just not so quick to call some rich guy a brilliant genius as others are. I prefer to call him a good business man.

Wouldn't Jobs be smater than Gates, since Jobs created the gui and Gates stole it from Jobs. Gate not only stole the programming behind Apples gui, but also bought the DOS system from IBM. Gates was good at buying and stealing and business dealings when he first started Windows. I saw what he was trying to create (forget the name of it) before he stole the programming behind Apples gui to use in Windows and it wasn't pretty. I don't think he would of went anywhere if it wasn't for what he got from Jobs. Orginally Microsoft and Apple were supposed to partner up before Gates backstabbed Jobs.

By the way, I'm not a Microsoft hater. Just stating what happened when Microsoft first came out with Windows and the relationship Microsoft had with Apple.

Jobs didn't invent the GUI. X

Xerox Parc did for the Altos computer. Xerox gave Apple access to the technology since the Xerox higher ups laughed at the technology ie. mouse. Xerox received stock in Apple for doing it.

Gates did sort of steal the idea from Jobs but it wasn't really Jobs to start with.

Jobs and Gates were business men, I think Wozniak is brilliant. Jobs and Gates are shrewd and competitive.
