my own US merchant account ?

Most of the people I know does not have a merchant account, but uses the billing processors merchant account on some sort of cybercommerce deal (or whatever they call it) Could someone explain to me what the advantages/disadvantages would be of have my own US merchant account ? I seems to me that it's a bit dangerous to left totally at the mercy of a review-guy at some billing processor. What's the deal ? Would I be more independant with my own ?

ps: (we already have a US company that could hold the account)

We run all of out sites using our own merchant accounts through Netbilling. IMO this is the bnest way to process. We started with third party and still have CCbill as a backup. However, we save alot of money and have control over everything with our own accounts.

Tlka to Erin, Mitch, or Karen at Netbilling to get hooked up.
