Broken-hearted Cubs fan apologizes for foiling fielder
Thu Oct 16, 3:55 AM ET Add Offbeat - AFP to My Yahoo!

CHICAGO (AFP) - Steve Bartman, the Chicago Cubs fan who won a place in his long-suffering team's history by blocking an outfielder's bid to glove an out, apologized to the Major League Baseball club and supporters.

AFP/Getty Images Photo

"I am truly sorry from the bottom of this Cubs fan's broken heart," Bartman said in a statement.

Bartman was sitting in the front row of seats along the left-field line Tuesday in game six of the National League finals between Florida and the Cubs, who have not been to a World Series (news - web sites) since 1945 and not won one since 1908.

When an eighth-inning foul ball dropped down toward him, Bartman - wearing a Cubs cap and radio headphones - reached up to try and catch it, unaware that Cubs outfielder Moises Alou was making a leaping bid for the ball as well.

Bartman missed the grab but in doing so knocked the ball from the glove of Alou, who jumped and yelled in frustration at missing the chance for what would have been the second out of the inning.

Given a reprieve, the Marlins went on to erase a 3-0 Cubs lead by scoring eight runs in the eighth inning and leveling the best-of-seven at three triumphs each.

Bartman, 26, needed the aid of security guards to escape the stadium. Fans threatened him, poured beer on him and generally blamed him for the loss.

"I had my eyes glued on the approaching ball the entire time and was so caught up in the moment that I did not even see Moises Alou, much less that he may have had a play," Bartman's statement said.

"Had I thought for one second that the ball was playable or had I seen Alou approaching, I would have done whatever I could to get out of the way and give Alou a chance to make the catch."

The bizarre twist had Cubs fans believing in the curse of the Billy Goat, which according to lore saw the tavern owner of the famed Billy Goat bar put a curse on the Cubs after his goat was refused entry to venerable Wrigley Field.

"I ask that Cubs fans everywhere redirect the negative energy that has been vented towards my family, my friends, and myself into the usual positive support for our beloved team," Bartman said.

It's not the guy's fault. He was doing what any other fan would have done: trying to catch a foul ball. Now the poor guy is being lambasted and used as a scapegoat.

Who is to blame for the other two losses?

I would have loved to see the Cubs go (I feel thier pain), but they only have to blame themselves for blowing a 3-1 lead.

It's just a fucking game. Anyone that seriously wants to see the guy get hurt should be taken out of the gene pool.

The cubs short stop that blew the next hit should be loathed more then this guy. That play was a joke. Perhaps he had money on the Marlins.

I personally would have loved to see the Cubs in the WS. The fact of the matter is simple. One play did not hinder them from getting there. They had plenty of chances to win last night. Wood blew it with his walks. Leaving the game losing 7 to 5 and 4 walks that 3 turned into runs. Take away the walks and the game is all of a sudden 5 to 4 in the Cubs favor. On top of that Josh Beckett came in, in a game 5 the Marlins had to win and was pure NAILS. Throws a complete game shut out.

At this point from a fans perspective I have been on both sides of this spectrum. Last year when the Angels rallied to beat the Giants I loved it. This year it is too bad for the Cubs, but that is the way the cookie crumbles. Still makes for great baseball and shit that legends and memories are made of.

Agreed...it is only a game vs. life

You have one cubs fan want a ball - the friggin world wants to kill him

you have a father who rapes his daughter then she commits suicide - the friggin world doesnt want to hear of it or cared - and no one wants to kill him??

See the problem we are all facing?? Priorities people!!!

their were 2 or 3 other hands reaching for the ball as well. Why don't they target them. Kinda lame if you think about it.
