its not illegal to buy any name. Keeping it is where legalities come into play.

the sketchy ones.. u can probably get away with it.

but direct violations of a trademark.. it really depends what u do with the name.

i sent ibm domain to a pornsite.
i got a c&d

i could have just put up a page talkingabout the wonders of ibm and shit and they might get anal with me

you cant build a business with a trademarked name..

For example:

Im pretty sure Asus would be cool with Asusmotherboards.com
as long as you sell Asus motherboards.. but if one day, for whatever reason, they decide you should handover the domain
you are fucked...

And if you spend serious dollars building a succesful concept
you are a victim of their mercy..

So unless its a GREAT opportunity (type-in domain for example)
dont bother taking the risk

is that a "GREAT OPPORTUNITY" as a typein domain name?

If that is the case: register the domain and use it to
get excellent SE traffic / rankings.

As long as it makes you more than the $10 domain purchase
its always cool.

Just dont build an affiliate program around it with 100s of webmasters linking to asusmotherboards.com or use it on
prints etc etc..

Consider available brand related domains as a gift you should
exploit to the max but always remember it can be taken away
from you at anytime ;)
