Keep your cell # while changing providers?

This is something I have been waiting for for over a year. They keep pushing things back. I recently got this in email.. thought it might be useful:

----------------------------

Did you know that if you switch cell phone carriers, you have no choice but to change cell phone numbers, too?

That's supposed to change on November 24 - the deadline for cell phone companies to allow you to keep your cell phone number when you switch carriers. It's called number portability and it's a big deal because consumers will likely see lower prices and better service as carriers try harder to keep - or attract - business.

Instead of giving consumers freedom of choice, most cell phone companies are trying to get Congress to pass legislation to delay number portability. Some even plan to ignore the new rule if they can't get their way in Washington. Worse, at the same time they are trying to stop number portability, most cell phone companies are busy collecting $100s of millions of dollars in number portability fees on cell phone bills.
Congress and the carriers should not stand in the way of this pro-competition, pro-consumer policy. Delaying number portability traps consumers who are frustrated with a CELL HELL of bad service and one-sided contracts.

Click the link below now to tell Congress you want to be able to take your number with you if you switch carriers.

Once you've sent your free email to Congress, please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family and ask them to join you in speaking up - it could help lower their cell phone bill, and get them better quality service, too. Word of mouth is very important to ensure number portability happens on time, with all cell phone carriers.

Thank you for your help.
