Mitnick is a very smart individual, his stories, advice and history have inspired many others to pursue careers in the field of network security etc. Youve got to be kidding me if you think that he is totally clueless and wouldnt be able to do such things as login to servers or popup a console. The fact is the basics remain the same and with his knowledge on the net, computers, technology, electronics, social engineering and more it wouldnt take him long to catch up. Just because he was deprived of inernet access doesnt mean he was deprived of learning. What makes you think he was unable to read books and practice things on the computer he was allowed to use? The internet isnt 100% needed to learn, all he would have had to done was simply get the jist of it down and get familiar with how different protocals, services, programs ran. He would then be more than ready to move fourth when he would finally be granted access to the world wide web once again.

Mitnick was reading books in prison that his fans was sending him. In past interview he said that part of his knowledge came by reading mags and books. Kevin is not outdated, he is updated.
