My father runs a very large Anti-Drug campaign in a prison in NYC called Riker's Island. I'm not saying it's the worst prison out there, but it's pretty fucking bad. I remember hearing stories from my dad of some of the people in the campaign that told him what life was like years ago, and how it's actually taken a turn for the worse. Stories about guards setting prisoners up to be raped or beaten, just because they didn't feel they were given the respect they deserved. He compared the NYC Juvenile system to that of a movie called "Sleepers".
If society really wants to take criminals and turn them into somewhat decent people again, perhaps putting them into confined rooms, alone, with working options, or reading options, or just something with a much less violent situations int to correcting their mistakes. Personally, I hope I never do anything to deserve a trip to a local or state prison. If I ever do something harsh, I hope it's federal and they stick me into a minimum security prison with all of the Enron CEO's..
That story is really scary, and I don't know about him, but I would damn well choose death over beatings and rapings, because life isn't THAT important to live out sucking someone's dick until they let you out, sorry, but that's just me.
