German Sources Say Russia Might Price Its Oil in Euros

Combined Reports YEKATERINBURG, Ural Mountains -- Russia is increasingly looking at pricing oil sales in euros instead of dollars, reflecting the euro's growing role as a reserve currency, German government sources said Wednesday.

"The question is taking on increasing significance," a person travelling with German Chancellor Gerhard SchrÚder on an official visit to Russia said.

A switch into euros by Russia, the second-biggest oil exporter behind Saudi Arabia and holder of the world's largest natural gas reserves, would represent a major shift in the balance of currencies behind the world's most traded commodity.

European leaders have long expressed interest in seeing energy contracts priced in euros rather than dollars to promote the currency and boost price stability in the European Union.

Most energy contracts are settled in dollars, meaning that for European buyers, trade in gas and oil is subject not only to fluctuations in their market prices but also to variations in the value of the U.S. currency. In 1999, just after Vladimir Putin became prime minister, he laid out a proposal to move Russia's trade out of dollars and into euros.

Saddam was fixing to clear Iraq of the sanctions and clear the UN Resolutions. In the process of which he was intending to convert all transactions to Euro's. When Saddam set his oil to the Euro is when Bush said "Fuck you Saddam!".

Afghanistan is supposed to be the oil pipeline to Europe that why afghanistan needed to get taken out also. Thus Oil from Iraq to Europe is supposed to be American bank rolled but I do not think it is going to work out that way.

This plan was prolly thought up by Bush, Dick and Ronald in a late night drinking session.

uh the US government has plenty to do with this. To try and get the economy going again the Federal Reserve has been expanding the money supply like it's nobodies business. The most basic economics tells you that increasing supply decreases price.. The administration have done everything but say 'we support a weak dollar' i.e. said they're unconcerned about the fall etc.. Of course a weak currency has advantages, it gives exporters a competitive advantage and the lower borrowing rates for locals hopefully spurs investment..

There is however a cost! This fucks in the ass foreign holders of the currency.. For trade of something like oil a currency has to STORE value, the USD has been in downward spiral this year, and anyone who makes USD and converts them into a local currency has been severely affected..

Of course Russia don't want to have to depend on the USD and the euro maybe convenient.. But to suggest this has *nothing* to do with the US administration is equally idiotic

What map are you looking at? The shortest route to Europe certainly isn't through Afghanstan. As a matter of fact you are even going in the direction.

Afghanistan has been used by the US to block Russia from having access to the warm seas.
Sea transportation was way too valuable for them and US knew that very well. Its pretty much the cheapest form of transportation.

There are so many potential pitfalls ahead of this country, and Bush/Cheney are doing their best to drive us drive into them.

If/when the foreigners stop buying our T-bills and financing our spending spree [trade decifit], we're going to be a third-rate banana republic because we shifted all of our manufacturing to other countries (Asia, Mexico, etc).

Does anyone realize that our DEBT is almost $7 TRILLION (with a T) dollars, and over half that is owed to other countries? And we have a $22 TRILLION dollar obligation to Social Security? Where do you think all the money being paid into SS is going? To help "balance" the budget. If they didn't include the SS money in the general fund, we'd have an $900+ billion dollar deficit this year instead of a $600 billion dollar one. And the SS fund? It's a bunch of IOUs - worthless scraps of paper. How sad.
