hummers are the new minivan for upper middle class soccer moms and men going through mid life crisis.

The H2 is based on the Chevy Tahoe platform (same used for the Escalade). The vehicle was never intended to be a pound for pound sister to the H1.

The vehicle was pieced together from parts of GM products. The H2 has been used as nothing more than a mrketing tool that will also bolster sales throughout the brand.

....was it successful....obvoiuosly the H3 would not be so soon to follow had it not.

The hype is just that....the vehicle was rated as one of the worst vehicles ever produced by consumer reports.

The off road merit......consider this to be a rerally awful body kit for a tahoe

The H1 has been...still is.....and probably will remain the most amazing off road vehicle produced in the world. The H2 is like the hiardresser brother.

Most people will say the Jeep is the most amazing offroad vehicle. I tend to agree with them.

I cannot speak for the rodeo drive H1's

I have spent many years taking the HMMWV to the limit of its capabilities (at times being pretty stupid).

You sound like you know your shit....I do not discount the fact the Jeep could very well be the best.....I know that 100% of all I served with felt the HMMWV was witout a doubt the most bad ass off roader we had ever driven...I might add that you brought up is that the proper driving fundamentals is the difference between breaking down or making it through.

i love my jeep! it would have eaten that road alive.

never driven an H1, but would only be interested in driving on OFF the road, anyone got one they want to let me drive?

General Motors is nearing a final go-ahead on the Hummer H3, a smaller, lower-price Hummer sport-utility model that GM figures would expand the brand's sales dramatically.

The H3 would be based on GM's 2004 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups. Those go on sale early next year as larger, more-powerful replacements for the Chevy S10 and GMC Sonoma compact pickups.

H3 prices could start at less than $30,000.

To keep costs down, H3 could use the five- and six-cylinder engines from the Colorado/Canyon pickups. Launch timing is uncertain.

GM bought the Hummer name from military-vehicle maker AM General in 1999 and has enjoyed significant profits from surprisingly strong sales of the $49,000 Hummer H2 SUV that went on sale July 2002. H2 is a modified Chevrolet Suburban underneath with rugged Hummer styling outside.

GM also sells the even bigger H1, starting at $106,000. It's based on the military Humvee that's still manufactured by AM General.

H3 ''is not an approved product program,'' and there's no deadline for a decision, says Hummer spokeswoman Heather Hall.

Unauthorized photos of what appear to be prototype H3s on a trailer in Topeka show that GM is well along in H3 development.

Expanding the Hummer line is important:

It draws non-GM buyers to showrooms where they get good treatment, because GM only allows its best dealers to sell Hummers.

It gives GM another SUV that uses hardware already in production, avoiding the expense of start-from-scratch development.

Despite criticism of SUVs as too big and too thirsty, they are the sales bright spot: up 21.6% last month vs. the previous May, according to Autodata, and up 7.2% through May, while overall new vehicle sales are down 5.8%.

Too bad you cant convince anyone else of that, they would rather blame the machine. But they are happy when they are bitching

I spent 7 years up close and personal with the HMMWV while in the Army. Got to drive them in snow & ice, in the desert, in the mountains, over the rocks, water crossings, deep mud, on the beaches in Haiti and in combat in Mogadishu. They are tough, rugged, all business no bullshit machines

Elli 10-08-2003 12:44 PM

If I spent that much $ on a vehicle, there's no WAY I would let it near those rocks. Mind you, if I had a nice 1976 Sierra Classic, that's another story... mudrunning in that thing was soooo much fun :)

The only good Hummer is the real Hummer (now so ingeniously known as the H1).

H2 is just a regular SUV given an expensive cover and an expensive name.

Who are more pathetic?

People who drive hummers or the women who are impressed by the losers who drive them?

pteam 10-08-2003 01:41 PM

guys the two hummers are very different.

I have owned both within the last 6 months...

I had a 2001 h1, with everything, and now a 2003 h2...

the h1 was awesome when it was the only hummer available, the problem with the h1 is its a speciality vehicle, driving on the freeway is the worst ride possible compared to any other SUV. And it only has 4 seats, and a fucking hump. Another thing sticker prices on h1's are alot more, the sticker on my h1 was $112,000. Imagine when you have some people with you and somebody has to sit on the fucking hump on your 100 grand vehicle... Now h1's are really cheap now, you can get them brand new for 70-80k and slightly used for 60-70k , nobody wants them anymore, everybody thinks they're the "old school hummer". But if we're talking strictly offroad, the h1 is the king, nothing else beats it. Now most people that own h1's don't go offroading every week. I took my h1 offroading maybe 10 times just for the fun of it, but most people don't buy them for that, and thats really what they should be used for, for people with gobs and gobs of money who have 5 vehicles already and they only use this one every now and then to go offroading and camping and shit... oh and maintance, haha! just say its more maintance than any other SUV by far, the regular scheduled pay maintaince are 150$, 300$, 600$, and 1200$, thats every 3000 miles, so if you drive it 12,000 miles your gonna pay 2500$ just in regular scheduled maintance...

now the h2 is totally different, if you go by sticker prices its less than half the price of an h1. But it has way more usable interior space, the h2 is actually taller and longer than an h1, and way faster, the gas engine vs deisel, the h2 is the ultimate onroad suv. my h2 seats 7-8 people... but then again i dont use my h2 to offroad, i put 24 inch spinner rims on it, cause i use it as my daily vehicle, to fit people in, haul jet skis, etc not to offroad...

two totally different vehicles, but then again if you put another 30,000$ in offroad modifications to an h2 and had it compable prices with an h1, who knows which might be better...

the h2 is for those 95% of people who don't go offroading everyday and want a hummer, the h1 is not realistic, its been the same platform ,engine and suspension for the last 10 years. Yes 10 years without changes besides interior refinement etc. Its old and outdated, why do you think the h1's are selling like dogs? Why do you think the sticker prices is 110,000 + and they are selling brand new for 30,000$ less than sticker price? The dealers cant sell them, people that have the money to buy them dont buy them anymore.

Think of it this way, if you had an h1 and h2, you would drive the h2 90% the time as your everyday, and the h1 when you want to occassionally go offroad, or ride around with the top down with 4 or less people around town etc...

I never claimed that they had anything in common. People on here see a video of an inexperienced driver breaking his tierod then they assume that the H2 cant even climb over small rocks, which is very untrue.

Its not as versatile as the H1 or a Jeep offroad, but OVERALL its a much better balanced vehicle than either of them, as far as offroad and onroad drivability is concerned.

And if you do know anything about offroad driving, you can easily see the mistake that the guy in the video made.

But fuckit, very few tgp kiddies on here could afford a H2 or H1 anyway so I'm finished with the arguement here. Its like talking to my fuckin sister-in-law's kids.

this is the exact point i was making. hummers aren't about off-roading, they are about how much money you make and how you can demonstrate it to everyone else by driving an impractical $75,000 12-mpg SUV that 95% of them never will be driven off road.

i'm sorry, but i'm not impressed.

if you want to show off how rich you are and how insecure you are then by all means drive a hummer.

everyone knows why you're doing it, so just admit it. as if having to drive a hummer isn't embarrassing enough, your denial of why you would drive one makes it even more embarrassing.

when i moved to vancouver i sold my new miata and bought a bus pass. it was way more practical and i met more sexy skater chicks that way.

when i moved to kansas i bought a clean 1977 ford f-100 pickup because there's no bus service and no skater chicks.

i was young once and i know what it's like to feel like you have to impress people with what you own.

now that i'm not a kid anymore i've wised up. some people never do.
