how do you make your thumbs?

i use arles to make my thumbs normally, but now i need an 88x88 thumb.

i think most sites dont allow it larger than 5kb and i am having a hard time keeping the quality crisp at this size.

in photoshop i save it as quality="2" or quality="1" and it just looks like shit.

suggestions?

thanks.

The problem is that photoshop leaves a lot of meta-information... that can falsely inflate filesize.. do your resizing in Photoshop, then RESAVE in Jasc Paintshop pro.. It strips the meta-information while preserving image quality.

Thats not all there is to it. Adobe prides themselves at photoshop having 87 million features and functions, but they dont pay much attention to the basics. In other words, the photoshop jpeg compression engine sucks. Maybe its just me but there is something wrong when you pay $500 for a graphics program and it cant compress jpegs worth shit. You can strip all that extraneous data out by using save for web but it still sucks. There are some plugins available for use inside ps, pegasus jpeg wizard compresses well and boxtops pro-jpeg has a nice feature that lets you specify the final size.
But for smallest file size you have to use a seperate app. I dont know anything that beats xat.

I've never had a poblem making decent 88x88 thumbs with photoshop. At a quality of 30 or so they're usually 1-3k.

What the hell are you guys smokin? I leave mine at a quality of 60 and end up with a thumb that is 3-4k.

Crop > Sharpen > Save for web > Jpeg High.. there isn't much more to it than that!

EDIT: typo

Photoshop to make the thumbs, resize to 88x88, and use save for the web, jpg. Quality of 60 or 70.

Anytime you're dealing with thumbs...some programs don't strip out the EXIF information from your camera. Make sure it's stripped out, it'll add 5-15k to your image and is useless online. If you got the content and didn't shoot it yourself, I doubt it's the case, but something to keep in mind.

I use photoshop's Batch Action, and I save them using boxtops pro-jpeg at about 80 % depending th size

It can "convert" 200 Pictures to thumbnails in about 5 minutes

you can also use Thumbnailer 1.0 (very chaep and very effective) but you have less control than with photoshop...

Don't forget the word "ABOUT" I never timed that, and it depends on the size of the pictures and your CPU speed also

Not if you use the save for web command in photoshop.
