THis is towards the paysite people mainly, but also Free sies... everyone's in the same boat ;)

Do you guys STILL require a page to be looking identical in IE and Netscape? If so, which version of netscape? 4.8 ? 6 ? 7? netscrap 4.x is always the worst to deal with, am wondering if I should just drop it in my tests....

I like netscape 7.0 a lot better then IE so I always make sure it works.

funny thing is Netscape is the standard for HTML, XML, etc and IE is not.... yet 95% of the population use IE.

		 for example...

I don't understand how this shit works hehe.... a textarea of 4 rows prints 4 rows in IE... in Netscape 4, it doesn't work unless it's inside a form... ALSO, it will not word wrap. in netscape 6, it will show 5 rows. in netscape 7, it'll show 6 rows... ALSO, font size is a tiny bit different from netscape and IE... that's just to name a few ;)

When validating sites, and galleries I require sites to at least be similar in appearance in both IE, and NS. I know there are differences in how the 2 browsers read, and show html code...NS tends to be a bit pickier about forms, and tables for instance.

When I am building my own things, it is an absolute must for my own sites to look as close as possible to the same in both browsers. It may take a little extra tweaking of code, but in the long run it does pay off. I'm still using NS 4.76...I'm lazy and haven't gotten around to upgrading. And btw, you can wrap in NS 4, I use this to do it... textarea wrap="physical" |

I don't use IE, but I do use Mozilla Firebird, so I make sure that it works find in Mozilla - which will usually look fine in IE.

Netscape 6 and 7 is actually just Mozilla with AOL crap thrown in.

So if it's works with Mozilla, you're pretty safe. Netscape 4+ is a dying breed... but yes, there are those people still using it... sadly enough. However, Netscape 4+ is more of a resource hog than Mozilla, so designing for Netscape 6 or 7 and having a disclaimer for the Netscape 4 people to upgrade is probably a good idea ;) |

I have a small non-adult site I kind of just fuck around with. Anyway I kept trying to get it to look right in Netscape and it was still all sorts of fucked up so I just put in a java s<k>cript that redirects Netscape browsers to a blank page with oneline of text that says, "Use Internet Explorer. No Site For You!" I got sick of messing with it and it's a screw ball site anyway so the 5% traffic loss is no big deal.

I don't require it, I just OFFER it. A customer is too valuable to lost just because the designer is some die hard Billy-Gates-bitch spoiled brat. It's like if I have a car sale, hire a marketing guy and he decides only to sell green cars, just because, no reason whatsoever. So, no matter what I use for browsing, I make sure all my design works on every platform

a little note: the only exception to this is... my own site! ![]()

There are a few exceptions (with IE proprietary tags), but if you cant make a webpage look the same in IE and Netscape, then you're an amateur.

there's always workarounds ... but it's really a pain whenever you step out of the normal BOX boundary of design.... but I agree it's mostly a question of putting the time to do it... I'm merely just wondering when Netscape 4.X will die... just as most of us (I HOPE) are no longer designing for netscape 3.X ;)
