Napster ready for test launch

Pioneering song-swapping internet service Napster is to make a legal return to business, two years after it was shut down.

The service will run a test launch on 9 October and should be fully operational by November, ahead of schedule.

The original website boasted 60 million users but was forced to close when record companies began legal action for copyright infringements.

Users will now have to pay for music from the renamed Napster 2.0 site.

Digital media company Roxio bought Napster last year for $5m (£2.9m), with plans to launch a legal service but cashing in on the brand name.

Had a little poll a while back. 50% or so on this board are more than willing to pay a 'fair' price for quality music online. If 50% of this board will pay you have to reckon that at least that many in the real world will.

Personally I would. I rarely want full albums and CD singles are a rip off. A dollar or so for a quality recording of a track I want without fucking about with kazza crap (ie finding it, getting a copy that isn't corrupted etc etc) and getting it without stealing works for me.

I always have been more than happy to pay for good music and not having to buy whole albums for a couple of tracks makes sense to everyone except the record companies. They seem for the most part happier to bitch about new technology and watch profits fall rather than to use it and make more money. Still - taking kids and poor people to court seems to give them a hard-on. Thankfully it finally seems to be changing.

These type of programs will never be successful until they lower their prices. $1 for a song is still a lot when you consider you can get it for free, and it's not encoded at the highest quality either. Maybe at .25 cents a song they could get more users

Yeah, I agree with ya on that, something more like 25 cents would be a lot better. I just wonder what happens if you download a corrupt file when you're paying OR are they gonna host all of the content.

The thing is for me is that I mainly use file sharing to sample a cd, I'd hate to go out and pay out cash just to download a song just to sample it and realize that it sucks.

I'm not one to download an entire album and burn it on cd. As a matter of fact, in the last 2 weeks, I bought 6 cds, I think that I'm giving them a nice share of money.

MusicMatch just launched a cool download service, too.

I've been using their "artist on demand" subscription service and love it.
