BREAKING:Register.com now wants all domain contacts verified or you lose your domain!

I just received the below email from Register.com. They want all contact information updated for domains or they will be cancelled. Has anyone else run into this? I think I'm gonna just switch registrars. What do you think?

************************************************** *

The following email is an important account notification.

************************************************** *

Dear Register.com Customer:

As a domain name holder, you are required to keep your
contact information up-to-date.

This is a requirement established by the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN
is the non-profit corporation that accredits domain name
registration providers, like Register.com.

ICANN requires domain name registration customers to keep
their WHOIS contact information up-to-date.

Please be aware that under the terms of the Register.com
Services agreement that you agreed to when you registered
your name, the provision of false contact information is
sufficient basis for cancellation of a domain name
registration.

To comply with this notice, please follow these steps to
update your contact information:

1. Go to: http://www.register.com/whois_lookup.cgi?
2. One at a time, type each of your domain names into the
search box.
3. Check to see if your contact information is correct.
4. If not, click here to log into your account:
http://mydomain.register.com/index.cgi?
5. Click the "Contact Info" link at the top of the screen
to update your records.

For your convenience, your user name is: likeimgonnapostit

Thank you for your cooperation.

Register.com Customer Support

Who knows.. wondering if a lawsuit is headed my way and they were notified the contact info was wrong? Anyone else get this email?

Reads like a standard notificatioin.. I think everyone with register.com got one. Maybe they are pissed they just lost their class action suit and the payouts are going out soon.

What do you guys think?

If you're worried about personal information leaking then form a corporation to hold your domains. What the fuck makes you so special that you're supposed to be allowed to hide your contact info? Unless you're a spammer of course, then I understand why you'd want that

No I'm not a spammer or doing anything illegal. I've been online for 3 years with my sites and this is the first time I've been notified to update my info or risk losing my domain.

Privacy is important to me and I don't think it should be mandatory that EVERY PERSON on the net have access to my name, phone, address etc. on whois. Don't you agree?

BTW went to the IMPA.org site. Good job! Do you know Brandon from fightthepatent.com? You both have similar goals.

I bet if they don't do random checks, ICANN does. They have a right to know this stuff if you want them to be able to verify ownership in a domain dispute.

I am trying to think of any business that you could not find out personal information about the owner.

As stated before, incorporate.

Thanks for the info Baddog. I appreciate your input. I hope it doesn't come to that thow. Incorporating is expensive and take about a month to do. Any other options you can think of?

Incorporate. It's that simple. Domains are leased to you and part of the terms that you agree to when you lease a domain are that you'll provide accurate contact information. There are many reasons for this, some of them posted above.

There are some domain registrars that have so-called anonymous whois info services; you might look into one of those. But really, if you're worried about personal information getting out (and that's a legitimate concern in any industry) then incorporate and use a business address/phone for contact info. It's commonly done.

I'm not involved with IMPA in any way shape or form other than I believe in what they're doing and want to draw attention to their site.

godaddy.com has a special private whois feature that runs about $10 a year or so.

just open an account, transfer the domain to godaddy under the private whois and your privacy will be somewhat assured.

take it easy,

Every domain should lead to proper contact information. I see nothing wrong with this.

When I need to contact someone who owns a domain, I don't want to have to call my attorney to get a damn phone number.

It was about 3 years ago I registered with them.

I think I'll transfer my domain to Godaddy.. Thanks for the info eatapeach.

I don't like getting a threatening letter from Register.com.. holding my domain over my head. I think it's for one domain that's expired and about to go public... but still.

Nobody else has gotten this email from Register.com?

I think plenty of crazies know how to use Whois. I used to get marketing material all the time to my address when I had my accurate info online. Adult crap that was very obvious. That's when I changed the info a while back. I figured if they could get it, obsessed surfers could get it.

This isnt breaking news they sent the same stock email out awhile ago, they arent actively searching out false users , if someone complains then your domain is invalid, period regardless of your regsitrar.

If you're in the US, you can get a DBA (doing business as) locally and easier than incorporating and use that name. You can get an anonymous email address. You can get a PO Box for that DBA.

What I really do not understand is why people, specially in our industry, deal with stiff, unflexible, bureaucratic, overpriced, main stream oriented, companies like them. It really goes beyond my logic.

Godaddy has also private registrations that hide your personal information from spammers, etc. and their prices are reasonable, their support is great and the attitude is just very cool.

Besides being expensive The Registrar guys are a bunch of spammers themselves. Try parking one domain with them, anyone visiting your domain will get 3-5 pop ups.

I use corporations for all my domains.

Its not very good at keeping anonymous though, most states now have online web searches where you can enter a corporate name and get the officers names and addresses.

You can however pay an attorney or someone else to be a nominal director and keep your name out of the public records, however you still need a legitimate phone number.

Personally I don't mind having my contact information available and would never run a business or deal with a business that wanted to cover up who they were.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I mean why spend $35 a domain when you get use godaddy.com or starget.net and spend under $10.

I used Registr.com 3 years ago! I've been using http://www.gkg.net for a couple years now and they're great $8.50 per domain!

Reads like a standard notificatioin.. I think everyone with register.com got one. Maybe they are pissed they just lost their class action suit and the payouts are going out soon.

What do you guys think?
I use register and I haven't received it yet. I was going to switch registrars anyway because of their outrageous prices. I'm not worried about whois info though as mine are all correct.
