Comic Book Fans/Sellers

Starting a new comic book company next year.

Wondering if any of you guys growing up bought/sold comics.

I've been around and in comics for 20 years and have had lots of fun.

Today's market is different and I've had the fun of opening new frontiers.

Sure am glad today's computers are up to the task as it cuts the cost of printing drastically!

The web helps beat the problems of the old distribution network and advertisers are in abundance.

I'm gonna have FUN!

I have enjoyed comic books for the past twenty-five years. I especially like DC Comics but also enjoy some Marvel Comics and the independents. One thing I hate with the new comics is when they have color in the word balloons. I want to be able to read the dialogue as well as look at the action going on.

Thanks, soon as I find out who Rictor is!

I'll bet he's got a few horror stories to tell. Retailers get so much grief in this business. I know the routine inside and out as my pal owns the Forbidden Planet comics chain.

Ja, they do that for one of two reasons:

1.) to distinguish when one character is talking as sort of a color key

2.) Because someone got artsy fartsy and thought it would be cool.

The best DC Comics ( My sister is an editor at DC and my pal Doug wrote 'Batman' for like the past 12 years ) are the olllld DC Comics from the late 50's to late 60's. Especially the Superman, Superboy, and of course the OLD 'Legion Of Superheroes'.

I could read them over and over.

do you have any suggestions of a comic affiliate program?

I own xmen.com and need to send it somewhere productive.

Y'know, that's the same reason I stopped reading comics. Reason I got INTO comics was too many of them sucked and I would write and/or draw something that I and my friends would like.

Comics go downhill for several reasons. #1 reason is people working on the comic ( usually the editors and suits ) who don't listen to what the fans want. The fans are like votes. When they buy a comic and write a fan letter they had better be listened to.

If you don't please your fans you're cutting your own throat.

Then you had 'gimmick' stuff. Foil covers, holographic doo-dads, everything EXCEPT a good story and art.

Over the past 10 years, so many hack artists who couldn't tell a story to save their lives got popular and then the books and companies died. They blame the web and video games but that's bullshit. It's a simple case of not producing things that are interesting and make the fans happy.

I have tons of comic ideas that I have not done much with except put a few of them on my non-adult website at http://www.moongem.com/comics/index.html . I have always wanted to start my own comic company but I cannot draw with a damn and none of my friends can either.

Your sister and friend sound pretty lucky and cool, Greg. Good luck with your new comic company.

Thanks! If you've got tons of comic ideas you shouldn't just let them sit there. If you don't know what to do with them, try reading first Scott McCloud's " Understanding Comics " the MUST HAVE book on comics.

If you can't draw you need to team up with someone who can. I have students and friends right here in LA that do just that. They get together and put out their own comics. If you have a high traffic website adult or not, you can sell them from the site or set up a reseller program. That's the beauty of the web is that YOU have control and can sell and get 100% of the cover price and offer resellers a very high percentage and all they do is LINK! EASY MONEY! But the work has to be good!

I'll take a look at your site and letcha' know. I might have an artist that you can team up with. It's not that difficult to start a comic company as long as you know 'how'.

MOON MYSTIC!!! ROFL! I like her! Tell you what, soon as I get my new scanner in I'll draw you up something as a drill.

This is what you do, write up a one-page scene with Moon Mystic and I'll draw it out from pencils to final color. We can show it off on our websites. Sort of like a tutorial. It oughtta be real cool!

Fangoria ROCKS! You can learn sooo much from Fangoria. I remember when it first came out!

You can build a house from scratch from the stuff that was shown off in Fangoria.

I remember reading about Stan Winston and Rob ( the ape master ), Dennis Muren, etc.

Makeup, costumes, carpentry, metal working and smithing, it's all in those mags. I remember when these guys cut their teeth then went on to win umpteen Oscars. Real cool stuff.

I'm sure you get this often, but I'll try anyway. I have a friend who's an artist, does lots of drawings and such. He went to some big drawing school in Jersey, can't remember the name off hand. A lot of the big comic artists work there.

Anyway, he has some AMAZING comic book art. Scanned, inked, and colored. He sent some of his work into a company a couple weeks back. Do you know of anyone looking for artists? Or maybe another way I could hook him up with a possible lead into the industry?

Thanks!

Hi Sly,

Your friend must have gone to the 'Joe Kubert School of Comics & Animation' in New Jersey. The biggest comics school there is.

I know Joe and his staff as his top instructor Mike Chen was my teammate on two comic book series! Mike is an awesome talent and great teacher.

There's always someone looking for an artist who's got what it takes. Have him email me and I'll see what I can do for him.

I still have all my old comics from the 80's (I collected as a kid)

Gonna hold on to them for another 20 years, see if the value matures into anything...
