Microsoft Gets into The Fray

In May of 2003, Microsoft worked with Artisan to release "Terminator 2, the Extreme Edition" (T2EE). The package has two discs: one is a standard 480i/60 DVD from a new 1080p transfer of the original film, the other is a Windows Media 9 (WM9) version of the movie at 1080p/24. The Windows Media 9 version of the movie will not play in a regular DVD player; it will only play in a Windows Media PC (with at least a 3 GHz Pentium 4). You can play it in a regular PC with WM9 if it has a 3 GHz P4, 800 MHz front-side-bus, and a good 8X AGP video card such as GeForce FX-5600. Otherwise, frames will be dropped. You also have to set your screen resolution to 1920 x 1080 for 16:9 monitors, or 1920 x 1440 for 4:3 monitors. With this release, Microsoft has leapt ahead of all competing HD-DVD formats by actually releasing an example disc to consumers.

Microsoft is making a major investment in the WM9 format. Their Digital Media Division (DMD) is loaded with PhDs. Clearly, Microsoft has bigger hopes for WM9 than streaming web video. With the kind of investment they are making, it is clear they hope to make it the industry standard for HD video encoding. But, even if it does not become the standard, it will definitely be a viable alternative that is already bypassing the turtle speed progress of other industry giants in giving us a usable HD-DVD format.

The current DVD format that we all use today has a maximum data transfer rate of 9.8 Mbps. Artisan encoded T2EE around 6 Mbps, so HD-DVD for the masses may be closer than we think.

In February, 2003, Microsoft approached Joe and asked if would be interested in releasing DVE in WM9. Joe provided Microsoft with two D5s in late June, a 720p/60 and a 1080p/24. Microsoft encoded DVE at 1080p/24 and 720p/24 using WM9 at 9 Mbps for the VSDA.

Providing you have the required TV hookup, the HD931 can convert the resolution of wide-screen DVD (852x480 pixels) to standard 480p, as well as the HDTV resolutions 720p (1,280x720) and 1080i (1,920x1,080). The DVI output works best when feeding fixed-pixel displays that use plasma, LCOS, LCD, or DLP technology. With CRT-based tube or rear-projection sets, the DVI connection is unlikely to deliver a noticeably better picture than component video would.

btw the mac's wont play this back yet, how ever M$ has announced that windows meda player 9 will be avail for OSX some time this fall which is good news.

You have to make sure you have windows media player 9 installed u might have a old version that requires a update, just go to their site and re-d/l it, the DRM protection will require a user connected to the net so make also sure that your computer your playing it back on has net access.

the target is people downloading these HD-DVD encoded movies.
the demo movies posted here are not excessively huge, 12 MB per minute of video average, go check out DeluxePass, nothing but DivX DVD rips , probably in the same file size range as these demos.Surfers and buyers of content overwhelmingly favor downloadable movie files over streaming. If the HD-DVD movies really are this small then there are plenty of cable and DSL surfers who would rent/buy the movies

I'm not sure if these demos are HD-DVD, could be just standard WM9 encoded files captured from the source which is HD-DVD. Better the source better the encoded movie will be. The videos are beautiful quality but I've seen the same quality in DivX rips.

Gateway posted some cool info. Even if these WM9 demos are HD-DVD, if our monitors are CRT we won't see any appreciable quality over a standard DVD?

pretty amazing stuff - the data transfer rate on these porn demo movies is like 6MB/sec yet the file sizes seem to be averaging
about 12 MB per minute of video. If you use Adobe Premier's default setting to encode MPEG-1 files at about 1MB/sec you'll get about the same size file as these HD-DVD demo movies, i've seen some guys on GFY produce nice quality 1MB/sec MPEG's at about 8 or 9 MB per minute of video.

this stuff is for videophile geeks, a high quality MPEG-1 movie is what most porn surfers want.

No doubt Microsoft is going to own this market eventually.

yup, i've been doing more reading on this, the SurferPictures demos were Microsoft's WM9 HD-DVD. I have a CRT monitor, the quality was great but to my eye on this monitor I've seen DivX rips of high quality DVDs that were the same quality.
What were the budgets on the exotic outdoor Hawaii movies?

Microsoft will win this battle too in the end I think. Though a guy on another board tells me there is some other technology for HD-DVD that is better than Microsofts - but that's probably another VHS vs BETA thing where the best product won't necessarily win out. What Bill Gates wants Bill Gates gets.

Video stores online and offline gotta be doomed, in 10 years there will be no reason to use a store.
