Anyone have a DVD-R/RW?

Just wondering if its possible to burn backups of your DVD's?

Or is it like blockbuster were all videos/dvd have some kinda encoding protection?

If not how would you rent a dvd and burn it? Possible?

I know warez is iiegal but I am trying to find a good reason to buy a 500.00+ DVD-RW that burns slow as shit..

The only use for a dvd-rw right now for me would be 6GB back ups...

Lots of replies on burners, heres some info on the burning itself.

You can make a backup copy of any dvd these days. Here is a good link to start for info
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/

Generally, dvds comes in Dvd-5 and Dvd-9 format, which are single layer and dual layer discs. Each layer is about 4.35 gb of data. All burning is done on single layer discs so the Dvd-9 discs are the real issue when it comes to burning. To get a Dvd-9 to fit onto a Dvd-5 you have a couple different ways to do it. The first is to remove extras from the disc like foreign languages, subtitles, trailers, making of's etc. The second way is to re-encode the disc, compressing data. In many cases you have to do both removal and reencoding to make everything fit on one disc.

There are a number of softwares that have emerged in the last year that make the process of turning a Dvd-9 into a Dvd-5 just a click of a few buttons. DVDXCopy, Dvd Shrink and Dvd2one are the three major ones. The best examples of dvd backups are not done with these one click methods but rather through using a more complicated software called Cinema Craft Encoder.
