How did America's music taste turn to crap?
Last night I ended up vegging out in front of the tv for a couple hours and watching the MTV Video Music Awards. For the most part, I hate MTV and what it represents. I actually hardly ever even watch anything on MTV (besides Jackass), so it was with some trepidation that I found myself hunched over on my couch watching the show.
As I watched the awards be handed out, I started to notice a trend. America, or at least MTV, has hip hop and rap stuck up it's rear end. I didn't keep exact numbers, but by the end of the show, it seemed like about 80% of the awards had gone to rap and hip hop artists. For some reason that just bugs me. Music that sells today is compromised mainly of a drum machine and ONE person singing or rapping to it. To me, personally, that's not music, nor are the people who make those "songs" musicians. Equally as annoying was the fact that it was practically the same five videos in every category. You would have thought that there were only about six or seven artists total on the entire music scene. Most of which were either rap or hip hop artists. How did this happen? How did America's music taste turn to crap? What is it that some people get from listening to a slutty girl or gangsta try and sing or rap to a drum machine? That's not music. It's a packaged product. more

Good music in USA is music that the record business can earn money on. Period. Money is God, everything else is nothing. The best popular music is made in UK. Sure, they make it to earn money but - as opposed to Americans - they also make it for something else. They actually like the music. If you scratch the surface, the music has a soul and not just a dollar sign underneath. |

Americans are too fucking stupid and lazy to have a musical opinion, so they just turn on the radio and are only ever exposed to what's being played on their local hip staion. It's a sad state of affairs, this country would be so incredibly different if people actually took the time to do a little research, read some rock and roll books, hear some good shit, & have a mind of their own for once about music. But this will never happen. 99% of American youth are nothing but brainless Automatons. It's sad...Music is such a powerful thing...so fucking powerful.

I'm nearly finished listening to pretty much every top 10 song (us charts) of the 80's. Trust me, there has always been bad music around and it usually beat out the good stuff for the top of the charts. There are some exceptions of course and thank god for them.
That said, having listened to all this music I will agree that there has been a general decline in pop music. Pop songs used to be better as far as my tastes goes but hey everyone has different taste. okay, back to new romantics and new wave ![]() |

here is honestly the best way to explain it. A good example is the NBA. It is now for all practical purposes completely black. Not that long ago there were plenty of whites in the NBA and there sure is no shortage of white players at the college level.
The black players are much bigger and more athletic, but at the same time dont have very good fundamentals, cant make free throws, cant pass, not very cerebral. So they arent necssarily always the best players just the best for the modern nba style of basketball. As teams added more black players, other teams needed to add them as well in order to matchup with them. Marketing money plays a big part as execs took note of the mega millions they could make off more high flying players like Jordan. So now you have a product dominated by one ethnic group, and from what Ive seen ticket sales have way gone down and the product isnt as good. But what can they do now. They arent all of a sudden going to say there should be more diversity. Whats done is done. ------------------- Its essentially the same thing with music. These record execs saw how the black music sold to white suburban kids and milked that for all it is worth. And just continually put out a more overdone low quality product. Whites tastes havent gone more for that music, its just thats the only thing being spoon fed to them by record execs. Most younger white guys I know seem to be into punk and woud rather die than listen to rap. But that kind of music is never played by the people in control. Now the record execs are using the blacks for a more pimp gimmick because the gangsta stuff isnt selling as good. So maybe in about 5 years they will get away from all that once some new white music comes on the scene that sells super good. One can only hope. |

They do give you a couple other choices. If you don't like rap then you must listen to the White Stripes or boy bands.

MTV is mostly a teen channel and teens change their musical preferences almost weekly..
Whatever is cool at the time is what they go for. and nowadays with the lil white boys trying to be black, it falls right into place.. Not too long ago Britney was the thing.. All the girls wanted to dress like her.. yada yada.. I remember back when the movie, "Bonnie and Clyde" came out, Foggy Mountain Breakdown was the theme song.. Lots of teens went to see it and all of a sudden they were into bluegrass.. Lots of teens now are into country because the singers are 'hot'.. MTV just shows a portion of what people are going for.. Watch a different music channel and you'll see an entirely different story.. MTV isn't a reflection of "America's music taste" |

When you start thinking like that, it means your getting OLD,
You can compare the same analogy to every generation of music. just think about the 60's english rock bands 70's disco 80's big hair bands blah blah blah |

I compare the popularity of today's hip hop to the Folk Songs of yesteryear .... 'an expression of feelings.
However, haven't heard much that compares with Peter, Paul and Mary's "Blown in the Wind" Will sure be glad when it passes...... Bring back the Back Street Boys - at least that is music and not chanting! Was just thinking the other day that the music industry is 'ripe - for someone new and TALENTED. Wouldn't take much to be a new superstar. |

NBA is a business. They are there to make money. So they have to get the BEST players to make a profit. and to say they wouldn't draft a WHITE player because it doesn't fit their style just doesn't make sense. Think about this, Why does the NBA look at the eastern european countries to recruit white players? Are the white guys in europe better than the white guys in the US colleges? |

This is because all the good bands cannot get a record deal.

rooster, the NBA is actually getting more white then black, give it a few more years and you'll really notice it..
NBA teams have been bringing in European players over College kids, because their Game skills are much more rounded for a team sport.

I don't consider myself a fan of rap/hip-hop music. But I do believe that creating this type of music does require a certain amount of talent. I think that the biggest thing tht turns me off to this type of music is not whether or not it is really "music" but rather the type of morals and the attitudes that are generally protrayed by the artists.
However, I suppose that that same morality arguement can be made for all kinds of music. more |

The only hip hop genre artist that I really like is Eminem and I think it's his energy and his excitement when he performs that I like. He is very talented, in my opinion. When I first heard his stuff, I hated it. But after listening to it a few times it grew on me and now he's one of my favorite artists. Plus, he's funny. He makes me laugh.

Saying todays music is crap is stupid. The type of music you like is just a matter of opinion. And people have different opinions.
As far as the MTV musics video awards go. They pretty much give out awards to the top 10 list. But that is what is popular today. Its a generational thing for the most part. My generation is different from your generation in thinking. And the same can be said for your generation and the one before yours. Music grows and becomes different with time. At one time it was taboo to play an instrument and all music was chanting. What would those people say about 60's and 70's music. I pretty much like most music for different reasons. What I like about Hip Hop/Rap is that it is fun to listen to. It is not serious like rock. But I like rock because for the most part it is serious. It just depends what mood I am in. As far as music being immorral. Well they may not be your morals but they are somebody's morals. Who are to say that you're right and they're wrong. Opinion thats all. It is not the music industry's job to raise our kids. It is the parents job to do that and teach our kids the difference between right and wrong. |

A big problem is corporate owned radio stations. Clear Channel and the like dictate virtually everything that will be heard on most radio stations throughout the country.
This may just be a matter of perspective, but looking back it seems to me there used to be a lot more regional diversity. With the advent of cable, those of us who lived in conservative parts of the country were suddenly introduced to a huge and exciting range of new music (MTV used to actually play music videos, believe it or not). Cable really shook things up. Small cable networks, the "big 3" broadcast networks, and radio stations seemed to be going after niche markets. Whatever your taste, you could find something to suit it. Music in general seems much more generic now.

The music business is no longer about making music. That's the problem. Its run as a corporate revenue machine.
If tomorrow urban teens stopped buying rap and hip hop CD's, you'd see an end to it on MTV as well. Got to keep in mind every generation goes through cycles. This shake your booty crap that is popular now will eventually tire out and a new style will replace it. In the 60's the Brits gave us the Beatles and that brought in a whole new style. Disco was the in thing for a while. Rock. Metal. Etc. I have to admit when this rap crap started I said this will last a year or two at best. That was well over a decade ago and its still here. But it does seem like they're starting to sputter. Sales are way off what they were. Record companies are no longer lavishing huge advances like they used to. That's what you see when a cycle is starting to run its course. I really don't know what other style can evolve next. It will be interesting to see.
