Why won't you move?

I'll probably move there when I graduate. Moving to usa is just too much hassle.

Here in Portugal the average normal job salary ain't nuff to have a GREAT life quality (not what people in Denmark and such are used to and see as AVERAGE)!

but if you are getting income from outside (like some of us at GFY) it can be good ;)

Now I am looking at Australia. But I want to keep my options open. I truly have NO preference where I go - what I do know is I want to go somewhere new. And I think anywhere would be an experience all in its own.

However - I have seen 350sqft apartments in France for like $1,750 a month CANADIAN! That's unreal. We pay like $400 here for TWICE the size!

I am wondering if I am looking in all the wrong places, or is metro europe really expensive?

Like most other *good* EU cites London is always quite expensive due to supply and demand. There are very few apartments under £250,000 (UK Stirling) that I would live in personally but prices are coming back down a little now.

As far as the Euro goes? We bought three new properties off-plan in the south east of Spain back at the launch of the Euro when it was very weak and in just over a year when we sold them all the value had risen by almost 40% plus the Euro had risen sharply too which was great.

If you are going to make a living on-line in the EU and don?t have a lot to spend just pick somewhere hot in the southern EU that has DSL and loads of bikinis. If you have money to invest then the northern EU cities are a better bet.

But I am hoping to try something with an English dominant language society. Not that I don't want to learn other languages, but the barriers of communication are too much if you're not fluent.

Yeah Prague rocks! It's not that expensive, czech girls are beautiful and people (usually) understand english.

If you need something about Prague & CZ, let me know...

We live in Denmark at the moment and here it's quit expensive to live. but on the other hand we can go to the doctor for free and the hospitals as well. (not that i am hoping that you get hurt hehe)

Cars here cost way to much, the price for a normal family car is generally about $ 23000
we live in a flat right now and pay $850 for 1 living room, kitchen, and two bedrooms. And then you have to pay 50% of your income in tax. But it's nice to live here thou.

we are moving to prague in a couple of months.

lived bout anywhere in holland but 68 euros ? i know groningen but thats insane either youre splitting your app with 5 guys or youre staying in a REALLY old house, i know this guy who had 20 euros rent, never increased for like 30 yrs, he had nuffin, holes everywhere in the walls, no central heating no nuffin, but still 20 euros a month hehe... they smashed his house and built $400k penthouses on the same ground... wonder why they did that...

GigaKaaro 09-18-2003 08:49 AM

My brother lives in Prague, says it's great. He's a cheap bastard but has a great apartment in the middle of downtown and does very well. Married a native, though, so he's pretty comfortable with the language. They really seem to like Americans as well.

wsjb78 09-18-2003 08:51 AM

Depends on where you live in Europe.... city or countryside? Central Europe? Eastern Europe? Mexico / Portugal? Balkan (Ex-Jugoslavia), Turquie?

Yearly roadtax for that car 644 EURO

And then of course your insurance and stuff

Gas---> 1,10 EURO per LITRE

ALso we pay like 40-50% income tax... Sales tax(vat) is 19% except on food then you pay 6% VAT

Andre

Damn, it's cheap in Holland :)
In Denmark, the only thing not more expensive is the gas which is more or less the same. But:

Merecedes CLK 320 -> ~100.000 EURO
Roadtax -> ~1.000 EURO
Income Tax -> ~50-60%
Sales Tax -> 25% on everything

Sucky but we get a lot for our money. That is, if you're unemployed, have children, study, go to the doctors a lot or are in and out of hospitals.

If you don't have any of the above stay far away from Denmark.

Try Spain :) Nice, climate is great, taxes acceptable and housing even in the fashionable spots are affordable.

conan 09-18-2003 10:19 AM

Northern Europe is expensive but we sell porn don't we :smokin
