First... is anyone else having trouble posting? This thing is really behaving erratically for me.

Anyway...

Looking at the state of websites that provide porn, there are three classes of money makers:

the porn producer
the porn distributor
and, the traffic trader

Porn producers ARE the porn industry (actors, directors, photographers, models). They are the content providers. For them, the web is just another way to add value to their product.

Porn distributors buy content and are middlemen between the producer and the customer. They build the website, do promotions, and service and support the customer.

The traffic trader is a middleman between the porn distributor and the customer. They direct the customer to the content they want.

One lesson from supporting customers in the U. S. is that the more middlemen you can remove (without losing value) between the producer and the customer, the lower the price becomes for the customer. When an industry starts to remove middlemen, you get a period of CONSOLIDATION.

It happens in every industry over time, from cars to clothes.

Think of it like a prostitute, a bordello, and a pimp. (It's not a flattering analogy, but it should make the point).

Joe Customer is feeling horny. He wants to find some action. So, he goes out to find a prostitute (let's call this free content from porn producers). There are plenty of prostitutes and Joe finds one he likes. He is happy.

However, the next week, Joe is out looking for action, but the quality is not what it was last time. He does not find what he wants, and Joe is unhappy. In other words, he cannot trust the quality of prostitutes when he is out there searching.

Since Joe knows that he will be horny again, he decides to find a more reliable source of ACTION. He finds a bordello (porn distributor). They have a certain quality of prostitutes, they are accessible and reliable. Joe is happy again.

As Joe goes through all the prostitutes in the bordello, he becomes anxious and wants new prostitutes. Since the bordello can only offer what it has, Joe decides to start searching again. This time, he encounters a pimp.

The pimp (traffic trader) makes all kinds of promises and sends Joe to all kinds of prostitutes, some are okay, some are not. But, in the end, Joe is able to find something he likes, and he is happy again.

In general, customers would not go to pimps, if bordellos had what they wanted. Customers would rather not have to go to bordellos if they could find the prostitutes themselves. However, if a customer could find a bordello with the services of a pimp, or a pimp that knows a number of bordellos that provide selection, reliability, quality, and security, the customer would never go anywhere else.

But the number one problem for the customer is finding a bordello or pimp they can trust.

For websites that provide porn, trust, reliability, quality, and security are real problems preventing the industry from really establishing itself. However, this is soon going to change with the arrival of the "supersite".
