Rock Band Announces Plan For 'Live Suicide' On Stage

TAMPA -- An alternative rock band's claim that it will feature a ``live suicide'' onstage during a St. Petersburg gig next month has gotten the attention of the concert hall owners and local police.

The Tampa group, Hell on Earth, said on its Web site that a terminally ill member of a right-to-die group planned to commit suicide on stage during an Oct. 4 performance at the State Theater.

The volunteer, who the Web site said would not be identified until the day of the show, wanted to carry out the suicide onstage to ``raise awareness for dying with dignity.''

Dave Hundley, one of the owners of the theater, said he found out about it via an e-mailed press release Monday. He said he was hoping to talk to band members to determine if they planned to carry out the stunt or were just trying to generate publicity.

``If I have an inkling that this is for real, I need to worry about it,'' Hundley said Tuesday. He stopped short of saying he would cancel the gig, for which the band has paid to rent the downtown St. Petersburg theater.

Hundley said Hell on Earth played the venue a couple years ago and has been known to stage some strange stunts, such as chocolate-syrup wrestling and grinding up rats in a blender.

``I wouldn't put it past them,'' he said of the staged suicide.

The Web site did not list a contact number for the band and repeated attempts to contact members Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Spokesman Bill Proffitt said St. Petersburg police started getting calls about the band's stunt Tuesday morning. It's a second-degree felony in Florida to assist a suicide, he said, but police were trying to get more information and hadn't yet determined how to respond.

``We've just begun looking at it and we're not quite sure where to go from here,'' Proffitt said. ``Obviously, the St. Petersburg police does not condone public displays of suicide.''

The band's Web site, which went down late Tuesday morning, did not say how the person planned to commit suicide.

The volunteer hoped to use the event ``as a platform to make back-street suicides a thing of the past,'' the site said.

But the band shouldn't expect applause from right-to-die advocates, said David Goldberg, spokesman for the Denver-based End of Life Choices, formerly known as the Hemlock Society.

``While we encourage national dialogue on dying and death issues, we are concerned about this particular circumstance,'' Goldberg said.

Funny how suicide is illegal.... I mean really, what are they gonna do to you? Lock you up? Your dead.

People who have no hope of surviving the illness they have and are going to die a long painful death or will be hooked up to machines for a lenght of time should just have their life terminated if that is their wish.

Who gains by keeping them alive? No one except the hospital who gets the $$ for keeping them alive on machines.

I mean please... what is the hang up with death and keeping people alive?

They actually do arrest you if you try to kill yourself and don't succeed. Kind of funny when you think about the irony of that.

I do think the terminally ill should have the right to do it at least since they are dying anyway.

Crazy really that the government controls our lives to this point of dictating we aren't allowed to die when we want. Obviously its in their self interest of not wanting to lose a TAXPAYER.

When I was driving to work this am some chick called the radio station and said her ex boyfriend played with this band briefly. She said he flipped out when one of the guys in the band cut himself and started beating off using his own blood for lubrication. EWWWWWWW!!!!!!

I take it you're against assisted suicide? You think people should be forced to spend the remaining years of their lives in pain and lying in their own shit with no hope of a cure rather than just going ahead and ending it? You think their families should be forced to watch their loved ones die slow, torturous deaths while mumbling incoherently?

I'm sorry, but if my mother were in that kind of condition with no hope of recovery, and she wanted to die, I'd help her, even if it meant jail time.

The band actually does pretty good crowd wize. They don't play shows too often, and usually put on quite a crazy show.

On the news, the venue theatre will cancel the concert if they suspect any chance of this suicide is to take place.

Its a 2nd degree felony for any charged with assisting, and the venue does not want the liability...

So this is NOT going to happen, they got publicity and thats worth alot of miles until their Oct 4th concert in St. Pete.

They raised alot of awareness already about the freedom to take ones life....no reason to really carry it out.

It is ironic we can put our pets to sleep when their days are numbered, but humans must suffer. Again its all about money. Doctors and hospitals don't make money unless you have sick and old people filling up their beds. Always follow the money trail.
