dvd purchase help - GoFuckYourself.com

ok, i can buy and rent dvd movies but i am clueless when it comes to purchasing them for backing up my pc (aside from the fact that this would be my first time), i am clueless.

with that said, can someone tell me the difference among these:

dvd-ram

dvd+r

dvd+rw

dvd-r

dvd-rw

i know 2 of them are readable and 2 are read/write but i dont understand the plus and minus signs nor do i understand what a dvd-ram is. can anyone clarify this and bring me up to the 21st century?
