North Korea Has New Missile which can reach the continental United States

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp..._usa_missle_dc

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea has used Russian technology to develop a new intermediate range missile that may be the most capable and accurate system in Pyongyang's inventory, U.S. officials said on Wednesday.

There also are "indications" the North Koreans have begun limited production of the longer-range Taepo Dong 2 missile, which can reach the continental United States, and this could mean the weapon is nearly ready for export, a senior U.S. official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Experts said if the North has built a new missile based on a new design instead of the old Scud technology, this would be a significant development.

In addition to working to improve the accuracy and range of all its missile systems, the North Koreans have been "developing and perfecting a completely new and different missile system, an intermediate range missile system based on an improved different technology," one official said.

American officials said the missile is based on the Russian SSN6, a submarine-launched ballistic missile deployed in 1969 with a range up to 3,400 miles. Other North Korean missiles have been based on the Russian-made Scud missile, which has a shorter-range and is less accurate.

One U.S. official said North Korea is believed to have acquired the Russian missile expertise in the 1990s when post-Soviet Russia was a "free for all" bazaar and everything was for sale. "There is absolutely no indication that the Russians are now or have recently -- within the last couple of years -- been involved in this program," he said.

RUSSIAN ROLE

But other officials said this is not definitive. Russian officials deny cooperation with North Korea but they also deny cooperating with Iran, and Washington knows that Russia-Iran involvement is going on, they said.

The existence of a new missile was first reported in recent days by Asian media, including the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo. But U.S. officials revealed more details about the system, its military import and its impact on six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear crisis held in Beijing last week.

It was widely reported that Pyongyang was expected to showcase the new intermediate range missile during festivities marking the 55th anniversary of the founding of the isolated communist state on Tuesday.

That did not happen. U.S. officials said one reason was that participants in the Beijing talks -- especially Russia and China, the North's only allies -- strongly urged Pyongyang not to do anything provocative that might jeopardize the talks.

Also, officials said, U.S. intelligence sent a delegation to Moscow last week to urge Russia to lean harder on Pyongyang.

Like most other issues involving North Korea, this was hotly debated within the administration, officials said.

Secretary of State Colin Powell, leader of the U.S. pro-engagement forces, backed the push to persuade Pyongyang not to display its new system while Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who have been hostile to negotiations, wanted to stand back and let the North do whatever it might choose to do.

Last month's six party talks in Beijing, designed to launch a negotiating process with Pyongyang, ended with no progress other than agreement to meet again, probably in November.

No missile will hit the US, I saw a few anti missile tests over the skies here in Vegas. Pretty impressive stuff.

Yeah, I bet you are one of those (no pun intended) that believe u have a functionnal anti-Ballistic missile defense system.

And BTW, the missile won't hit the US, you are right. What will hit the country are the warheads coming in from space.

When the US will be able to detect any decoys from the real warheads in a 200 missile launch scenario, then I'll believe it.

...and yet liberals continue to be anti-anti-terrorism.

Hopefully all these jackasses will let Bush build the 'StarWars' system that Reagan proposed, THEN we won`t need to go around stopping all the jackass countries from building things to kill us 'just because'.

The Starwars program is probably one of the quickest ways to human annihilation.. Do as much research on it as possible before advocating it as it seems really cool and hi-tech..

As for North Korea..

OOOHHH NOOOOO< What will we do... Better pump another 250 billion into the military budget!! That will save us!

the star wars program is not a defense system, it's a super weapon to be able to send a missile anywhere on the planet on anyone.

You know what they say.... If "top secret" info leaks out of the US government about new technology, then it's already obsolete to them.

Just because 100% accurate Star Wars anti-missile technology seems unthinkable, that in itself combined with the fact that they've gone public with the possibility of developing it likely means it's already opperational. They are just now slowly introducing it to us as "a possibility" instead of presenting the real deal all at once.

As an example, look at the Stealth aircraft they revealed during Desert Storm. It had been developed at Area 51 over a decade earlier.

Extremely advanced technology simply is not disclosed the day it's opperational. It's a matter of national security. They keep it covered up so they'll be at an advantage should the need to use it ever come.

As for currently spending billions to develop it, that's just a way to in part fund the black budget. They inflate the costs to "develop and test" certain technologies in public view (that already exist behind closed doors), and funnel the leftover into top secret programs.

This is just the way things work. In fact, how much of the $87,000,000,000.oo that the President want's for Iraq will be funneled into Area 51 and other development centers?

Bottom line.... These things are very well funded, and they've likely perfected it over the last two decades.

When Japan got nuked, nobody imagined such a weapon could be possible. When we avoided radar in Iraq the first time, that shouldn't have been possible.

If N. Korea decides to launch on us and it doens't make it over the Pacific, we'll know why.

N. Korea is a manufactured threat. We need some madman to justify pumping money into the military industrial engine.

N. Korea's main food sustinance is other N. Koreans so that shows you how brilliant they are.

Heck, Hoboken New Jersey could wipe out the N. Koreans before they got one shot off.

dude Clinton had nothing to do with what happened there other than he sent the troops, that was a fucked up mission from the begining... However I do belive Clinton should not have pulled the troops out... they should have regrouped and finished their mission because it made us look very week... I know somebody that was there and I really don't think he belives it was Clintons fault that his fellow soldiers were killed.

YAWN.

The program is to cost $11 billion for the research, construction and maintenance of a fleet of seven of the aircraft. If funding isn't cut, Owens says three planes could be operating by 2007, and the full fleet by 2009.

Are you serious? Our so called "Star Wars" defense has LESS than 50% accuracy in destroying missiles in simulated attacks so far.

We are fooling ourselves to even begin to think we can simply knock out an incomming missile with our current technology.

The patriot missile system worked very well against those shitty low tech missiles Iraq had(which were banned under the ceasefire agreement btw). I have no idea how well they would work against high tech ICBMs if at all.

So you are saying we already have an effective ABM defense system in place..but the government just hasn't told the American people??

The ONLY time where you can stop an ICBM is at launch. And you have to be pretty close from that location. Once the warhead has been deployed in space, you are basically fucked and there is no protection after that. It's like trying to stop a falling speeding bullet.

A lot of you seem to be under this false impression that the North Korean Taepo Dong 2 is an ICBM that will enter orbit and hit the United States from space.

This is not the case. These are not like our "minute man" ICBMs which enter orbit. The missle travels like a long range scud would so it will never enter orbit.

Also this missle has to be launched from an old fashioned launch pad and isn't protected underground like our ICBMs are. So if the north koreans were to set it up for a launch, our spy satalites could easily flag it and would could take it out right in north korea via some tomhawks.

No need for a missle defense shield with this, it doesn't come down from space. Hell...I bet our Patriot 3 batteries could take this sucker out if it WERE to be successfully launched.

It's pretty well known that the U.S. has a "black budget" and doesn't publicly announce their technology until years after it has been established.

If you really think that the U.S. will annouce their missle defense program as soon as they launch it, than you are quite naive.
