Norfolk will be pulling the ships out soon if they haven't started already.

If you're in the path, get the fuck up out of there. This one's going to be a killer.

About 2-3 years ago I was looking at buying a full time house on the beach in the Outer Banks. Seeing what hurricanes, no'easters and other storms does to those islands made me buy a full time house in the mountains, and rent a house at the OB for a few weeks every year.

This is a big one and I'll be sending good wishes to those of you in the path!!!

Fuck that bitch. We live on the coast in NC and were not fucking going anywhere. We've survived, Berth, Fran, Bonnie, Dennis and all the rest. What's one more! I just hope we don't loose power for to long - that's the worst part!

I've been packing up all day. Gonna head for the parents' house wednesday night.

Someone asked about the ships in Norfolk - the Admiral was debating today whether to close the entire base down tomorrow. Word has it that they decided to go ahead and do it.
The ships started leaving port today, but there are plenty that are in for repairs and are not seaworthy. Discussion is being made to tow them out to deep water.
The submarines they will sink right where they're sitting.
The base issued a category V emergency alert on Friday so folks could start getting ready.

If Isabel is still 100mph when she gets here, it will be the first time in 100 years that a 'cane that strong has hit the area. It's a major, major disaster coming for us.

Right now their predictions have Isabel landing on Cape Hatteras thursday morning with winds of 120mph, and then hitting us thursday evening with winds of 100mph.
It could be worse though, because she is reforming and getting herself straightened out structurally (earlier she was tearing loose a bit).

It really sucks to be sitting in your home looking around and thinking "In 72 hours, this might not be here. Should I take that? What about this?"

*sighs and goes back to packing*

Charlie I wish you'd reconsider.
Camille was a bit weaker earlier in the day before she hit too - and just before landfall she powered up, doubled her storm surge and came plowing through like a fucking freight train.

Listened to a story on the news this morning about some folks in an apartment building that decided to stick it out and have a hurricane party. Of the 20 folks in the building, 1 survived. The water was a foot from the ceiling in her SECOND STORY apartment and she managed to swim out and catch a log. She turned around and watched as the apartment building just collapsed in on itself.

They found her 3 days later 5 miles away, still floating and clinging to a log.

I really, really wish you'd reconsider.
If the winds are supposed to be *more* than 100mph when she gets here, we're heading for Tennessee. My kids' lives are too important.

"Energy engineers are well aware that greenhouse gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels are the primary cause of global warming and, therefore, the warming of oceans. And if, as expected, the oceans are warming it is not unreasonable to expect that hurricanes will become much more powerful given the boost in thermal energy available to feed their growth. This is a terrifying scenario, but unfortunately there is still too little being done in the U.S. to curb emissions of greenhouse gases. And if that?s not bad enough news, U.S. honor is at stake over this issue on the world?s stage.

The international community is struggling to engage the U.S. in ratifying the Kyoto Protocol? The United Nation?s 1997 climate change agreement setting binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions. The European Union (EU), which includes our principle G8 partners, has become increasingly frustrated that, in their eyes, the U.S. is not assuming its customary leadership role on this issue. Either in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, or especially in ratifying the Kyoto Protocol."

In less than 3 days my home could - and probably will - be gone. Others here in the area are talking of staying and trying to ride it out, risking their lives.
