i have been confronted with egregious stupidity nearly every day of my life. sometimes it was me... but we all have our moments and no-one is perfect. so given that i have this to say:

point a:
george bush is our president. i can not be swayed from this simple fact: he is the king of the idiots.

point 2:
every time i am stuck on the freeway in traffic and finally pass an accident i am reminded that many, many people cannot simply keep it in the lines and not hit anything.

But there are some people who are not stupid. The trick is to figure out who the stupid ones are and stay away from the others. Because if you hang around with the really, really stupid people and your not too stupid yourself then you can look like your not so stupid very much any more.

They themselves should be able to classify it as a mistake.

If I jump off a bridge and break one of my legs so I can't walk properly. That would probably be a mistake considering I have never jumped of a bridge before and I didn't know the consequences.

Thats sacrifice. Totally different ball game. The people going to war know there will be loss of life and if they don't understand that they're stupid.

Since there is a prior incident that suggests there will be loss of life.

Neither are techinically stupid if the realize there will be loss of life and they accept that.

I'm only guessing at what your question was really getting at, but as I interpret it, the issue is less that of stupid or not, as it is about the difference between our conscious and our sub-conscious. Both in terms of what they propel us towards and which is the more powerful.

Being to able to sell people big, shiny cars more easily than cheap, enviro-friendly transport certainly suggests that most people behave stupidly. For thousands of years ordinary men and women have rallied to their various flags to kill and be killed, usually to put the vast bulk of any rewards into the hands of people who stayed safely out of harm's way. That is perhaps the most stupid behavior of all.

If we think about it at all, we probably like to believe we are unique individuals driven by our intellects. But in reality a lot of our responses are programmed into our genes and most of the rest is induced by our cultures. Thus we behave stupidly (or maybe it is better to say illogically) in many situations and we are stupid in the sense that our intellects are more often than not unable to over-ride our built-in responses.

Many people have the capacity for creative, innovative thought, and would hardly be thought of as stupid. Yet I have never seen anything to suggest that these individuals are immune from the illogical responses that are the normal reaction to most situations.

I think you need a different question

And how often do we think that people with worldviews similar to our own are smart and that people with dissimilar worldviews are "stupid" regardless of how this worldview is arrived at? You see this on GFY all the time with comments such as "you're stupid", "you don't get it", and "why don't you understand what I am saying"?

Independent? Nearly anything any of us believes is something we read somewhere or the result of knowledge gained from other people's work. You can see in anyone the imprinting of their local culture and experiences.

Of course, we're sheep! That is the beauty of civilization. No one has to figure out everything for themselves.
