Johnny never would've been part of something like BP4L. Way too much class and respect for the common man.

That's a fantastic pic of him. RIP Johnny, and give June a hug for us.

Only 2 Highwaymen left.

I listen to Cash nearly every day. I have a few songs in random play in my song lists etc.

Only Kris and Willie left.

I was talking about this last night, its totally fucking weird.

I happened to be listening to his Danzig cover ; of '13' and the line

'Bad luck wind been blowin at my back' there was something haunting about it, and I thought to myself I wonder when he will die.'

and then today its announced.

Truly chilling, these are dark times.

I agree he needs heavy rotation today.

The color black will never be the same.

He wrote this beautiful song with Bob Dylan...

"Girl from the North Country Fair"

Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all.
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Is this stat right? I thought I just heard them say he sold more records than the Beatles??

Wow that's impressive.

And he wrote over 1,500 songs.

I don't feel so old now. I would have thought that many of you guys would not even know who Johnny Cash was.

I'll never forget how suprised I was to find out that June died before him. Have to give her tons of credit for sticking with a guy who worked so hard at being an outlaw.

R.I.P Johnny.

Another fave:

Folsom Prison Blues

I hear the train a comin'
It's rollin' 'round the bend,
And I ain't seen the sunshine,
Since, I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom Prison,
And time keeps draggin' on,
But that train keeps a-rollin',
On down to San Antone.

When I was just a baby,
My Mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns,"
But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin',
I hang my head and cry.

I bet there's rich folks eatin',
In a fancy dining car,
They're probably drinkin' coffee,
And smokin' big cigars,
But I know I had it comin',
I know I can't be free,
But those people keep a-movin',
And that's what tortures me.

Well, if they freed me from this prison,
If that railroad train was mine,
I bet I'd move out over a little,
Farther down the line,
Far from Folsom Prison,
That's where I want to stay,
And I'd let that lonesome whistle,
Blow my Blues away.

What's sad is he spent his whole life writing songs that are legendary. He does a NIN song before he dies, gets like 7 nominations for awards with it, and now that he's dead the only tune they play of his is NIN's.

I'm sure if he were alive and watching the news, he'd much rather they played his original classics. A lifetime of writing songs summed up with someone else's words when looking back at his life.

RIP

If anyone has an mp3 of his 'Washed My Face In The Morning Dew' thats one of my favorites. With Tom T Hall.

http://www.tthproject.com/tthall/l_i_washed.html

The first strange town I was ever in
The county was hangin' a man
Nobody cared if he lived or died
And I just didn't understand

(Chorus)
So I washed my face in the morning dew
Bathed my soul in the sun
Washed my face in the morning dew
And kept on movin' along

The second strange town I was in
They were laughing at a poor crippled man
Begging for nickels and dimes on the street
And I just didn't understand

(Chorus)
The third strange town that I was in
Was settled, peaceful and nice
The rich got richer and the poor got poorer
And to me it just didn't seem right

(Chorus)

Some day things are bound to change
It can't be very far
And each injustice I have seen
Will come before the bar

Then I'll wash my face in the morning dew
Bathe my soul in the sun
Wash my face in the morning dew
And keep on movin' along

I saw Waylon Jennings a couple times, Willie Nelson 4 or 5 times and I saw Johnny Cash once...what a show, the crowd was equal parts blue haired old ladies, the mohawk crowd, metal dudes in Slayer and Metallica shirts and preppy princess types...

I remember having tickets for his show at the Hard Rock here in Vegas a couple years ago that got cancelled due to his first rounds of iillness and he shortly retired from touring due to it...

Wasn't he on a Happy Days episode once?

I sort of remember it.

I forgot to list this song as one of my favorites and the lyrics are hitting a little harder today...

Daddy Sang Bass

I remember when I was a lad
Times were hard and things were bad
But there's a silver linin' behind every cloud
Just poor people that's all we were
Tryin' to make a livin' out of blackland earth
But we'd get together in a family circle singin' loud ...

CHORUS
Daddy sang bass, Mama sang tenor
Me and little brother would join right in there
Singin' seems to help a troubled soul

One of these days and it won't be long
I'll rejoin them in a song
I'm gonna join the family circle at the throne ...

No, the circle won't be broken
Bye and bye, Lord, bye and bye ...
Daddy'll sing bass, Mama'll sing tenor
Me and little brother will join right in there
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.

Now I remember after work,
Mama would call in all of us
You could hear us singin' for a country mile
Now little brother has done gone on
But I'll rejoin him in a song
We'll be together again up yonder in a little while.

CHORUS
Daddy sang bass, Mama sang tenor
Me and little brother would join right in there
Singin' seems to help a troubled soul

One of these days and it won't be long
I'll rejoin them in a song
I'm gonna join the family circle at the throne ...

No, the circle won't be broken
Bye and bye, Lord, bye and bye ...
Daddy'll sing bass, Mama'll sing tenor
Me and little brother will join right in there
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.
