that is a downfall with linux, but I'm trying out a box to see if I can just setup the essential windows apps so I can leave it alone as my primary workhorseInvestor with 5m - 15m USD to invest. Plus, it is one thing to have a whole in your system, which you could most likely block with a firewall.. But when you run a server, you have to have some ports open, and you don't want a buggy MS server. First off Microsoft waits forever from when the hole is first discovered. Atleast with linux everybody could program it themselves!

I think most people accept that MS software really is just crap, but they use it on the desktop because there isn't really an alternative for most of their software requirements (unless they are willing to put the time and effort into mastering Linux, and even then there just aren't apps for some things yet). Linux is fantastic. and great for doing anything technical, but not without its headaches... but I certainly could never go back to M$.
The other thing is that uptime and security are much more important in the server environment than on the desktop.Comment

The main reason Windows is on most home computers is cause it's easier to use than linux. Unless Linux becomes easier to install and use for the average person, Windows will keep dominating the market. I'm surprised though that Mac hasn't over taken Windows in the market place. I can't even install my webcam on my Linux system for lack of drivers for the Linux system.
I'd rather use a Mac than Linux for home use. Even though I do use my Linux system at home every now and then.Comment

i think most people have more important info on their home pc's then they do then their servers.I know guys that won't put any kind of work related info on their windows machines. I had a friend who worked for a mainstream company and they had hacked into another companies network to see what projects they were working onComment

Just buy a Mac! Use that for your work machine and Unix/Linux for your server.

FreeBSD is the easiest to install, might be a small learning curve, but after that its done in 10 mins flat.Originally posted by icedemon

Anyway people use windows because we all use the same shitty programs, and honestly windows has gotten much more stable. I still wouldnt run it for shit as a server since FreeBSD+Apache is so easy to use, configure, manage, so there is no benefit to using windows. But windows on the desktop has plenty of benefits.Comment

Have you tried windows on your server? I switched about a month ago and so far I am impressed. I have 5 servers and none of them have crashed (not the case with linux). I am also very pleased with the speed. It is also a alot easier to administrate. They have remote desktop that allows you to connect like PCanywhere and its like staring at the screen on the server. Very Handy.Comment
