Discuss what's fucking going on, and which programs are best and worst. One-time "program" announcements from "established" webmasters are allowed.

What's with this true-counter.com shit?

Everywhere I go I'm getting a out.true-counter.com popup that sometimes breaks through the google popup blocker.
Ever since I was reviewing some bullshit galleries for my TGP, whenever I hit some sites there are massive popups, like at persiankitty, thehun, thumbzilla.

Neither Spybot nor Ad-Aware find a thing... and I can't find anything odd in my registry.

WTF?

Any suggestions?

You've been infected by a Russian hacker. Look for a file named "hosts" in your windows directory.

Win98: c:\windows\hosts
W2k: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
XP: c:\windows\system32\drivers\hosts

Delete it and you should be fine again. Make sure you install all available patches for Microsoft and Internet Explorer to prevent this from happening again. An anti-virus program is also a good thing to have. Most likely you got infected by downloading some kind of toolbar to your machine... if you ever get an offer for such programs simply DO NOT install 'em. Usually they're potentially hazardous for your machine...

If this didn't fix your problem please check www.thehun.net/gazette on how to find and fix other potential problems

thanks for the reply... I thought no one read my post...

Actually I just found the culprit about an hour ago...

it's related to a search page called global-finder.com
which is the same as the idiots from GlobalWebSearch

They hit me with a new exploit that acts as a style sheet in a windows directory and hijacks pages...

info I found was here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html
you'll see on "Variant 5" a list of re-directed web sites.

if you don't have that on your gazette you might want to add the info or link
