I've been the last 6 years. It can change your life it you let it.
I HIGHLY recommend the DVD "Gifting It" (www.giftingit.com) if you want to get a sense of what its like.

Hey now.... Glitter Camp rocks! hehehe

I've been 5 times, starting in 1997. I missed last year on purpose (wanted to take a break pretty much), and this year sort of by accident (as in we accidentally conceived in May). And as we'll be baby-bound in 2004, I know I'll NEED the Burn desperately by the time 2005 rolls around.

I pretty much gave up trying to describe it to others in quasi-emotional terms.

Now I pretty much say,

"Imagine every fringe element of society you can getting together for a week and building a city in the middle of nowhere"

It's got its good points and bad, but it is definitely an unforgettable experience!

And I don't think toting your own water in is too bad, especially if you're accustomed to even semi-primitive camping.

The heat can be a bit much depending on where you're from...
As I hail from Texas, Nevada's dry heat is a decided improvement over Austin's muggy summer hell.

Burning Man began in 1986, and now takes place each year in Nevada on what is called "the playa", the remnant of a 13,000 year old lake which is now a massive, flat, dusty, surface with extreme weather conditions and no life whatsoever.

It's not easy to describe what Burning Man is, as it is an experience unique unto itself. It has been called "one of the most important cultural phenomena to emerge from contemporary America"; and I fully agree. The Burning Man website describes the event as a "temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance" . This was not an understatement.

I was there. It was amazing.

Just got the book "Drama In The Desert" which comes with an awesome DVD about Burning Man. Just sound and images. Nobody trying to explain anything. Highly recommended.

I actually preffer another fesitval, thats VERY similar, except it's nestel'd in the rolling hills of western New York.

It's called Starwood, and it goes a little like this...

Imagine...

...a vacation in another realm, where many realities meet. A place where Scientists sit with Shamans and Druids dance with Deadheads. Where African drums jam with bluegrass fiddles, and Celtic harps combine with psychedelic synthesizers. Where political activism meets Earth spirituality, where theatre and life meld, where days are spent in exploration of inner and outer space, and nights blaze with laser lights and bonfire flames.

Oh, and it's put on by a group called, "The Association for Consciousness Exploration, ACE for short"

You can imagine...

can't you???

;)

Every yeay i swear i will get it together and plan the trip and go, but i still havent done it. This is not for the spoiled, the weak nor the high maintenance.
supposedly.....
you cant leave anything behind. You cant buy anything in there. You cant just go and expect anyone else to take care of you...you must arrive totally self sufficient. That being said.....you should see some of the crazy pictures they have from the last several years. My friend drives from SF each year and sets up a Stevie Wonder shrine with her minivan and another couple of vehicles. Lots of naked people. Lots of love...and then they set the thing on fire the last night.

It is nothing like a vacation. It is challenging and uncomfortable and rigorous.

And it makes it so that the people who make the effort are the ones who are committed.

Keep in mind that the whole concept is "participants only."

(I'm in the white fur pants)

Its not a party or festival. Or a place to take pictures of naked people. It is a temporary community. And all 30,000 people there are responsible for making it better for everyone else. You don't have to dress up or act crazy, but you have to contribute *somehow*.

Its more like a pilgramage than a vacation.

Obviously, I take it pretty seriously.

I have a site of my past pics and stories from Burning Man. If you want the url, shoot an email to hal @ pornposse.com. I'd post it here, but I doubt everyone would appreciate the pics of me wearing the vibrating pink fur jockstrap.

one of my favorite passtimes is watching the freaks walk by in the mall while my wife is shopping. I plunk down on a bench and watch them stroll by for hours. It's very entertaining, and from the looks of the pics at burning man, some of the peopel there might be ALMOST as freaky as the mall idiots I like to watch.

A-fucking-men.

It is her open mind that makes me know how much she'll enjoy it. jaYMan, I hope you stop by Camp Lustmonkey next year for a drink and some shade.

As far as "who belongs"...Keep in mind there are 30,000 people there.

Right next to the hippies are the Deathguild Camp who every year construct a huge replica of Thunderdome and beat the shit out of each other every night on bungees to the soundtrack of Skinny Puppy and flamethrowers.

And right down the road are the 70 year old Tuna fishermen who come every year and BBQ tuna steaks all week.

There are old people, young people, freaks, bankers, preachers, mormans, yogis, and everything in between.

The common thread is they all are attracted to "radical self expression." Meaning they (at least by the time they leave) see themselves, however they choose to define it, as artists.

If you want to go, you belong there.

Starwood was a good time. I haven't been there in a while.

Keep in mind that the whole concept is "participants only."

Its not a party or festival. Or a place to take pictures of naked people. It is a temporary community. And all 30,000 people there are responsible for making it better for everyone else. You don't have to dress up or act crazy, but you have to contribute *somehow*.

Its more like a pilgramage than a vacation.

I totally agree with everything you said Hal. And going to this event "did" change me.

The man burns in 359 days. ;-)

OK. One more pic. This is the temple of gravity. Each concrete slab weighs 7 tons. Awesome.

I seem to remember a few sponsors talking about sponsoring something at Burning Man a few years ago.
Maybe we could have the GFY camp? THAT would be a trip!
I have been wanting to go for a long time. Maybe next year we can make it a group thing?

I remember reading about this in the early 90's - looks like a LOT of fun, but I'd need air conditioning.
