If you arent ripping out you should probably keep your RPMs lower when starting in 1st gear. On my bmw I keep just above 1K when starting in first.

I've driven both ways, my cousin has had a Skyline here in the US since 96 and I have driven it enough to be very comfortable with shifting with the left. In the US we are odd about high RPM's. It's cool sometimes and other times it's immature. The difference between a saab and a whored neon is that at 5k the saab won't sound like a lawnmower
