Google about to get owned?

I was listening to NPR a little bit ago and one of the founders of Google was on. Someone called in to the show and said that he "used to be a big fan of Google" and said he now uses http://www.vivisimo.com. While I was in the car I thought "What a fucking idiot". Once I was back at my desk I decided to check it out. This thing is pretty fucking cool honestly.

It wasn't that long ago that someone said "Hey, check out this new search engine called Google". I didn't think it could touch Yahoo or Infoseek at the time. Obviously I was wrong. Could this document clustering method be the next big thing?

I thought the same thing when Teoma.com came out.
Their relevancy is at least as good as googles.

Not a ton of traffic yet though I imagine.

Damn, Vivisimo is pretty handy.. I like the clustering. I searched for "terrorists" under Top News, not only does it return links to a ton of news articles regarding terrorists but it clusters a bunch of releated terms on the left including Iraq, suspected, FBI, Al Qaeda, charges and more..... very sweet.

Yeah, I said the same thing about Google a few years ago. "Google", WTF is that? Now I can't hardly remember any other URLs.

Shit man! Vivisimo rules.

Really nice results, very relevant, very well organized, pretty deep digging too.

im not 100% sure but i think these are the same kids i saw on tv who came up with this technology and were advised not to sell their idea to companies for sums of even 12 million,

i think it could very well be the next thing.

This thing is definately handy - I didn`t realize it til I started discussing it with a friend:

(13:02:00) b a l d t a c o: i like google
(13:02:05) cArliTo: everyone does.
(13:02:09) cArliTo: me too.
(13:02:10) b a l d t a c o: hahah
(13:02:13) cArliTo: but this thing is fucked
(13:02:14) cArliTo: look
(13:02:15) cArliTo: do this
(13:02:20) cArliTo: type porn
(13:02:24) cArliTo: then on the first result
(13:02:33) cArliTo: click 'show in clusters' and look on the left
(13:02:34) cArliTo:
(13:02:45) cArliTo: you think it`ll give you CP links
(13:02:47) cArliTo: but it dont
(13:02:53) cArliTo: it gives you news articles about the FBI
(13:02:54) cArliTo: 8)
(13:03:26) cArliTo: pretty handy for research
(13:03:33) cArliTo: gives you all the related subjects
(13:03:34) cArliTo: so
(13:03:37) b a l d t a c o: haha
(13:03:48) cArliTo: if you search for ' american history' it probably gives you a ton of options
(13:04:11) cArliTo: Yeah it does

It looks like a meta-search engine. It uses MSN,lycos, netscape, etc for its results. I would be more impressed if it uses its own spider.

exactly,it's nothing else than a metasearch with cool layout. It won't go far.

Problem is google is very smart. They probably already know about this and are developing there own system.

Either way, google still owns!

Vivisimo is not very different from the html version of French search engine Kartoo:

http://www.kartoo.com/en/kartoo.html

which has been around for some time.
