i just had my dog put to sleep

It?s the weirdest thing Sunday I came home from a shoot and when I was unloading my jeep I heard him crying. My dad (who the dog actually belonged to) came to see what he was crying about and from the looks of it he had hurt his paw because he was not standing on his back leg. To get him off it he was given a sit command (the dog was very well trained) and then he was told to lay down on his side. Since that moment he never got up again. He laid there for 2 days not moving until I was able to take him to a vet because of the holiday. After having him looked at they told us they had no idea what was wrong with him and that it was going to cost at least a thousand dollars just to diagnoses him. Then if they were able to figure out what was wrong it was going to cost a lot more to give him the intensive care he needed. The poor dog was in so much pain and he was peeing on himself because he wasn?t able to move me, my wife, dad and 2 kids had to make a decision and let them put him to sleep. My son took it ok but my wife and daughter really took it hard since we have all watched him grow up he was only about 4 years old! He was 120 lbs, when we got him he was 8 weeks and only 10 lbs.

we just now finished burying him in the back yard.

in his memory here are a few pics....

I love my dog, he's just recently learned how to lift the lid on the garbage and get in ... He likes his new trick. Would be difficult to have to do something like that for sure.

nah its too cold here for any poisonous snakes.

its just so weird because before i left to for our shoot he was in the yard doing just fine. I doubt anyone could or would have poisoned him because my wife and kids were home with him all day sunday.

sorry bout the loss of the dog, they are part of the family, usually the quietest and the one with the most dignity and integrity

i'm keeping a 14 year old golden retriever together with duct tape and pills and thousands of dollars of vet bills over the last two years. hope i don't have to make the decision ever to put her down. if she was in pain i would though but the vet says she's not in pain, her hips are just shot, so i carry her up stairs.

Thats a shame. It always seems to happen with Rottis, I had one and she died at 5 years.

She had cancer and we knew she was not going to last long, but when she got worse suddenly it was a holiday and none of the vets would answer the phone.

In desperation I took her out back and shot her, hardest thing I ever did in my life.

A friend sent me a card which is sort of the dog speaking to you, which pretty well summed it up:

Grieve Not -
Nor speak of me with tears,
But laugh and talk of me
As if I were beside you...
I loved you so -
'Twas heaven here with you.

I'm sorry hon. We had to do that a little over a week ago. Our gal was 13 years old, a Heinz 57 mix and a fantastic friend.
It's so hard having to let them go, but it's better than making them live in pain just to keep us from hurting.

DAMM sorry to hear that man...

I have two Rotts myself and the female was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia when she was 2yrs old...8 years later and she's still hanging tough, no drastic signs of pain but some minor discomfort on rainy days....

both male and female have had cancer and associated surgeries...it's been rough but they both pulled through, but scarey every time, they are like kids to me...

but the day that the pain is soooo bad like it was for your pup and I have to put one of them down, is going to be one of the worst days of my life I'm sure of it...

again, very sorry to hear of your loss....

cute new puppy btw...

if your income is less than about $40,000 a year I offer my deepest sympathy.

If it's more YOU'RE A CHEAP FUCKING HEARTLESS BASTARD THAT DESERVES TO BURN IN HELL FOR HOLDING OUT ON MEDICAL SERVICES FOR YOU LOVED ONE.

bummer. i've gone through a lot of dogs in my lifetime

went to visit my parents the other day, and found out they put down my little doggie a while back. they just now decided to tell me about it (although i haven't been over there in a while, i talk to dad quite a bit on the phone).

after spending half my life having to sleep next to that dog, it kinda sucks, i feel your pain.

oh well i guess, on to the next one. although i don't think they have plans to get another dog. i'll have to be getting one. damn, that's like 7 dogs, and those are the ones i can remember off the top of my head...

spending $$$ on medical care for an animal is every person's personal choice. Dan says money was an issue, vet bills can be enormous these days, what if the bill ran as high as $5,000 - and the treatment/operation didn't work - now you've got a dead dog and a family that has $5,000 less to pay for whatever.

my vet bills the last two years are about $5,000. i often feel ripped off and my guy is actually fairly reasonable. there's a state of the art vet hospital i had to go to once in an emergency, the bill i got was ridiculous.

I am so sorry about your loss. I recently lost my best friend of 13 years. A male black cat who I've had many journies through life with. Nothing makes it easier....

On the bright side we recently adopted a kitten who is now 9 weeks old and he rocks.. He does not replace Ralph but he helps ease the pain (and the quit nights...LOL)

I've paid over $10K in vet bills over the last 3 years on my basset. if you can afford it - PAY IT - who cares how much it is. Would you be asking about the cost if it was you that neded medial care.

it's a diferent story if you have NO extra money at all.

Sorry for your loss.
My dog Ned (german shep) is 13 years old and like my shadow.
Would be a sad day.

Losing a beloved member of the family, even a pet, is never good. So sorry to hear about the loss of your dog

I feel your pain I had to put Bear down last year too . . . He was a Rott/Doberman mix. Fucked me up real bad he was only 5 years old. Had him since he was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand.

I feel your pain. My 13 year old Dobbie is on his last legs and I will be surprised if he makes it through the week. I'm actually so scared right now to go into the backyard to see if he's alive because he was REALLY out of it today. He is my family, my son, my reflection of trust and loyalty. I cannot even type this anymore, I'm too emotional. Sorry for your loss.
