    Surfers: Hurricane hitting us tonight/tomorrow

can't remember the name of the hurricane, but it's about 300 miles off right now, and still coming.... waves are expected to reach 12 ft, (Hawaiian) by morning on the Maui south shores....

and you surfers know what that means: HOLY FUCK!!!! 12 fucking footers on Maui south shore??!!!!! That's un-fucking-heard of!

I will be out with a board in one hand and camera in the other.... if I can't get the balls up to go out in it, I will damn sure be taking pics of it. Those are some MAJOR fucking waves comin' brah.

Hey Amp I'm not a surfer but I would like to know why a 12 foot Hawaiian (I take it this is a wave and not a huge ass Hawaiin surfer ) is equal to a 36 - 40 foot wave?

Jimena is her name. I am tracking Fabian out here 125 mph winds could make landfall here on Thursday or Friday, seems unlikely at this point. Watch out Carolinas this is a mother fucker of a storm. Could easily replicate Hurricane Andrew. Is this your first hurricane Amp?

I am a born breed surfer I can help

Mainland measures the front of the wave as wave height.

as in Hawaii they measure form behind the wave..

Thus 5-6 feet in Florida is only 0-1 feet in Hawaii.

If you look at a wave from the front it will look 5-6 feet tall..

but once you go behind the wave its only 1-2 feet

                        To help clear.

yea I never figured out why the hawians do it that way... why measure off the back of the wave, when you ride the front... dosn't make sense to me.

yeah, their measurement system is wacked..... there's a whole complicated formula for it. Can't remember how it actually goes.... but basically, they measure the back of the wave instead of the face.

Also, there's no such thing as a wave over 30 feet here. Meaning, they only measure to 30'. Anything over that is just considered a 'Monster'. Peahi/Jaws type shit. To see this on the south shores will be a fucking sight.

                                Latest report:

                                Hurricane headed for Hawaii
                                From correspondents in Honolulu
                                September 1, 2003

HURRICANE Jimena plowed across the Pacific with 137 kph wind Sunday, heading for a glancing blow on Hawaii's largest island with high wind, strong surf and heavy rain.

The hurricane, about 345 kilometers southeast of Hilo at 1200 AEST today, was moving westward at 27 kph, the National Weather Service said. The hurricane was slated to pass about 80 kilometers offshore from South Point, the southern tip of the state, sometime Monday morning.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center posted a hurricane watch for Hawaii, the state's biggest and southernmost island, and a high surf warning was issued for the southern coast of Maui. A flash flood watch and tropical storm warning were also in effect on the Big Island.

Wind of 64 kph , with gusts to 96 kph, was expected along the coast late Sunday along with up to 15 centimeters of rain.

Surf was expected to reach as high as 15 feet (4.5 meters) along Hawaii's eastern and southeastern beaches late Sunday and Monday, the hurricane center said.

Watch out Carolinas this is a mother fucker of a storm. Could easily replicate Hurricane Andrew. Is this your first hurricane Amp?
I'm watching Fabian as well - he's up to 135mph winds now, category 4, and he's slowed down to gather up power. Idiot on the weather channel last night said he was headed to cuba, but if you watched the "animation" on the site it clearly showed him heading straight for South Carolina.
Looks like he's angling more north now and that fucker is headed straight for me - I'm right by the NC/Virginia state lines, by VA Beach.
He might burn out before he gets here though, or do what that big one did last year and just sit offshore drowning us in rain for a solid week.

Mainland measures the front of the wave as wave height.

as in Hawaii they measure form behind the wave..

Thus 5-6 feet in Florida is only 0-1 feet in Hawaii.

I consider myself a fearless person and there are not many things I won't try just for the thrill of it, but surfing a 30 - 40FT wave? I think I'll just sit in the bleachers and watch you do that one AMP.

Be careful out there AMP. That's seriously beyond hardcore extreme surfing.

Ive sat through hurricanes in days of darkness with the windows boarded up.

Plywood over the windows with no electricity on an island that was under 4 foot of water for over 2 weeks when I was young.

                                                            Hurricane Hugo I believe.

My grandmother tells me the story of Hurricane Betsy, that was a real hurricane.

There are boats where I am from that were movied, and they left them there. Picked up the boat moved it a few miles and put it on land... ;)

100+ winds for 3 days straight is like listening to the devil whisper to you.

I have surfed in hurricanes before...they even had me on news..all these people are crazy..

You have to understand I was on the swim team..I was also in the best shape of my life..6 pack eveything.

When they see people going after huge waves most of the time they know what they are doing.

I say if your strong enough to paddle out past break going head on then your good enough to surf the wave.

Anywave that can go 10-30 mph though the water you need a tow-in thats what JAWS/MAVRICKS is all about..

Idiot on the weather channel last night said he was headed to cuba, but if you watched the "animation" on the site it clearly showed him heading straight for South Carolina.

After living through hurricanes in FL (we were there visiting relatives in Jax during Camille, then moved there a few years later), I just couldn't bear watching everything I owned being taken by the sea.

IMHO, the OB are due for a massive hurricane/nor'easter that will do some serious damage to those $1-3mil homes they've been building right on the ocean.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (search) lifted the hurricane watch for Hawaii, the state's biggest and southernmost island.

Still, high surf and a threat of heavy rain put a damper on Labor Day beach plans for residents and tourists along eastern and southern shores of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island.

Beaches remained closed Monday because of rough waves and rip currents. Surf was running 8 to 12 feet high, with 15-foot waves still possible.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 170 miles south of the island's main city of Hilo (search), or about 140 miles south of the town of Pahala on the south coast.

Maximum sustained wind had slowed to 70 mph, 4 mph less than hurricane strength, down from 80 mph earlier in the morning. The storm was moving west at 17 mph.

I am tracking Fabian out here 125 mph winds could make landfall here on Thursday or Friday, seems unlikely at this point. Watch out Carolinas this is a mother fucker of a storm. Could easily replicate Hurricane Andrew. Is this your first hurricane Amp?
Actually Andrew nailed So Fla, Hugo popped the Carolinas in '91... luckily the path that it took was largely unpopulated for most of its path, it was still a Cat 5 storm when it was nearly 250 miles inland. We had no power for 9 days and of course no one did anything to prepare, since the thought of a hurricane coming up like that was not something conceivable at the time.

I slept thru the whole thing and woke up to the deadest quiet I'd ever heard. Nothing electric was working most anywhere for a couple days. Gas lines in danger of leaking, you name it.

Interestingly enough I lived in New Orleans for 2 years and never even got close to a hurricane, but being in Charlotte (not even on the coast lol) got hammered with one.
