Are paysite memberships considered a tax write-off for adult webmasters?

After all, you're doing market research

LOL, that's a new one, but market research is a business expense.

Not sure about companies, but in Australia sole traders (individuals without a company structure) can only deduct the portion of the cost that is directly related to the business.

What percentage of a pr0n site membership would be for 'personal use'?

I deduct it. I enter it as Market Research. Considering I'll join a site and check it out first before advertising it, this truly IS Market Research...

Actually you should but towels for that. Not only can you depreciate them over time but you can also write off the incidentals like laundry soap and fabric softener

Well, see that's the gray area. We have that too. Personally I wouldn't write them off. Why? Because the adult business is the most scrutinized business in the United States.

But if you want technicalities, sure.. as long as you can prove that it's for market research purposes and not purely your own personal gratification it can probably pass as a business expense. Question is, how do you prove it? And is it really worth it? Do you have hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of such expenses?

Actually the law now says that the burden of proof is on the IRS, not on the taxpayer.
So they have to prove that it ISN'T a business expense to take the write off away from you.

And checking out the competition is something any smart business owner in any business would do.

Technically, yes. But as a member of the most scrutinized industry out there do you really think it's wise to take your chances and go up against the IRS in an investigation? I wouldn't.

That's why anyone worth their salt will suggest you keep documentation on every expense (receipts, statements, bills, cancelled checks, etc).

Ask any financial advisor, other than me, and they'll say the same thing. :D
