My XP does that too, it annoys the fuck out of me...

It started when I installed SP1.

the hanging on install is from the system restore feature built into XP, what's probably happening is the system is setting a restore point, which can take forever.
You can disable it at
control panel>system>system restore

sometimes it's because windows doesn't like or isn't cooperating with something on your system. sorry it's not very specific, but it's sometimes the problem. and, of course, this can be both harware or software issues. if you haven't changed the hardware recently, i'd check your softwarez first.

there have been a million reports of this same problem and NO answers. Microsoft has been told about the bug(s) a million times and have not even commented on it. I finally did get to the point where i just re-installed the OS, but I went from XP back to 2000.

i say this with a word of caution.

you might want to check out microsoft.com for updates and or pathes to fix this problem.

could work, could fuck it up worse than ever.

back up your data before any downloads !!!!!!!!

Maybe some odd driver searching for some hardware that doesn't exist anymore? ..

Or a automapped network drive and your net is unplugged .. usually causes long timeouts.

xp does the same thing for me.. i had to get a new laptop it just stuck on the screen to boot up for 2 days.. now i only reboot once every 2 - 3 months .. afraid it will never come back up.. if your using xp.. network another computer to it and save the whole hd before you reboot.. it might never come back up.. happened twice

Hmmm... This could be caused by your broadband connection believe it or not. Something about seeking network or something if your broadband connection is jacked in. Mostly w/ DSL and never experience it w/ cable. Think if this is the prob you can seek it out in technical support forums on web because it is a big issue.

I would assume (so I could be very wrong) that SP2 beta implies the beta to the Service Pack itself, but the patches and stuff in that beta would all be "final" patches, updates & upgrades.

I'm not sure if you got this resolved yet but I had the exact same problem with windows lagging on boot up and installshield freezing up for a long time. I replaced the ATA cable from my harddrive to the motherboard and all problems were resolved. Replaced it with an 18" copper one from frozencpu.com

This may not work for you but it worked for me, the magic of computers : )

edit: I have an athlon xp 2200+

this is what startup is supposed to look like

this is mine - notice the HUGE interval between 30 and 54 seconds where it does nothing
