How long before the draft is reinstated?

I think within 6 months to a year.
The military is already strained with two wars..and we are going to be in Iraq for years to come, they have to bring back the draft.

    18 - 26 baby!

      It will never happen.

If there is ever a need for the draft again, the whole world is FUCKED.

It would be interesting to see how excited the GFY Bush supporters would be about war if they or their kids started getting drafted.

I wouldn't put it past Bush to reinstate the draft if he gets re-elected. But before election time, he won't do it because his popularity would plummet to nothing.

He's already shown a lack of regard to soldiers in the reserves and national guard by keeping them on active duty for a year or more. These are people that signed up for a weekend a month and would be called in during a crisis or emergency, last I checked we were "peacekeeping" in Iraq and Afghanistan, hardly a national emergency (all other Iraq politics aside).

In January, when a Democrat Congressman introduced a bill to reinstate the draft, where were all of you?

The government does not want the draft reinstated. The powers that be still remember Vietnam. When there is a draft soldiers are not professionals and not there on their own free will. That means the pressure from the public at large to end the conflicts they are involved in it much greater than today.

A draft only works when the public is really behind a war and believes their survivial is at stake, like WW II.

The reason Rep Rangel tried to introduce legislation to bring back the draft was to prevent the current Iraq mess. He believed that is middle America had to sacrafice their children in a war instead of some one elses children they would not provide Bush support.

                      Agreed!
Interestingly enough, we are already stretched so thin in Iraq that on the news last night they were saying that for the first time since the Voluntary Army began, not only will grunts be doing one year shifts as in Iraq, but back to back one year shifts. (Of course, they said, they'll get SOME time off between each deployment). With the money cuts soliders have received and the grueling circumstances they are put in, they are almost the true victims in this war!

Australia tells Bush to FUCK OFF:

Downer: No more troops to Iraq
                        August 25, 2003

AUSTRALIA would not deploy extra troops to Iraq despite growing problems including the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Mr Downer said while Australia was a willing partner in the liberation of Iraq it made it clear to the United States that the commitment was limited and no more troops would be provided.

"Before the war began we made it clear to the Americans that we did not have the resources to keep troops there for a long period of time," he said.

"We had issues in our own region that we had concerns about."

Mr Downer said he knew of no approach from the US to reconsider that position.

Would you like to put a cool 10k bet on that.

Bet will be that within 6 months that a draft will be instated.

We will both put 10k into an account, I'll have my attorney draft the contract at my cost, and disputes will be handled by an arbitrator.

The last thing that the military wants is the draft. (I'm ex-army). This is from the top down. From Rumsfield to any sargent you ask, nobody wants a draft. Unit coheasiveness drops.....training dollars are wasted.....everything goes to shit.

After the first gulf war and Clinton came into power, there was a HUGE reduction in forces. Troop, unit and vehicle strength in every branch was cut almost in half under Clinton. We are starting to feel that now.....but the military sure as hell doesn't want the draft back again.

Well if memory serves, the draft was initiated by Lincoln a Republican.

If you see the movie "Gangs Of New York" you'll see what happened when they initiated it.

The only way you'll get a 'new' draft is if shit really hits the fan like major police state shit. But that'll be after an extensive National Guard and Reserves campaign.

Most dudes will say 'fuck it' and head to the hills and since we've got millions with criminal records they can't join or won't get drafted.

It'll be a mess over the next two years. No telling exactly when if at all a draft will be initiated.
