So its like unbelievable to you? That's what he was getting at, American's cant even imagine to leave a door unlocked, because of obvious reasons.

hmm..

what he shows of canadians and their doors being unlocked is in a small comunity... if you go into more populated areas like downtown or whatever .. ofcourse people lock their doors.

except as an example on how it works...:

when a burglar comes into a canadian home he carrys a knife or something. but most of the time nothing.
but in the USA all the robbers know people have guns in their houses. so then when a burglar comes in he will probbly shoot you first because he expects you have a gun

and down here in canada everyone is friendly lol

commie bullshit or not..

Gun murders 1996
Great Britain 30
Canada 106
Germany 211
United States 9,390
Japan 15

don't you think there should be a 'war on gun murders' or something.. surely something can be done about that, the rest of the world seems to be able to deal with it.

First of all, comparing raw numbers like that is just ridiculous. If they all had the same population they might mean something.

Your numbers don't show the reasons of those deaths.. Homicides vs. Suicides, etc. In Japan, people use knives to kill themselves in the US they use guns. Factors such as those will skew those numbers.

Here's a chart that shows relative Homicide comparisons:

http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvinco.html

Your numbers seem to imply that one is 88 times (9390 / 106) more likely to be killed in America than in Canada. In reality, Canada has 1/10 of the population that America has.. So multiply your deaths by 106 (assuming they would scale in a linear manner, which I seriously doubt) that's still 1060 deaths.

In reality the homicide rates for America and Canada per 100,000 people per year are:

United States: 5.70
Canada: 2.16

I'd like to see Canada's population grow to 272 Million without that homicide rate increasing. I have a feeling the homicide rate increases at an exaggerated rate as more and more people are crammed into cities.

The state of Alaska just repealed all anti-handgun laws. It's now legal to carry a concealed weapon (handgun) without a permit at all! Since the state is so big and people have their space, I don't think the gun related deaths will jump... In fact they might go down. However, if LA or NYC tried this, it would be a disaster.

Here's the bottom line... It's a controversial issue. It's not going to be resolved on GFY.. So it just is what it is.

This is my last post in this thread since I need to clean my gun!

So I lied... one more post..

This is the table for Internation Violent Deaths...

"'Gun death' statistics are frequently cited, in the manner above, to strongly suggest that guns are the cause behind the high violent death rate in the U.S. As in the case of the Los Angeles Times article, no mention is made that over half of those violent deaths are suicides. The CNN article mentions gun homicides and gun suicides, but fails to show us the total violent death rate of other countries, not just gun deaths. For example, in Japan, where gun ownership is rare, its total suicide rate is higher than our total suicide rate. "

http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvintl.html

Violent Deaths per 100,000 people per year:

France: 22.67
United States: 18.57
Japan: 17.34
Canada: 15.64

Michael Moore could have presented some of these arguments in his "Documentary" (used in the loosest possible form), but it wouldn't have given him a slanted enough story. He wouldn't have won any awards!!

Maybe he should do a story about Canada and Japan's extremely high suicide rates.

Again, per 100,000 people:

France: 20.79
Japan: 16.72
Canada: 13.19
United States: 12.06

Aren't the Japanese and the Canadians embarrased by their unbelievably high suicide rates? Look at the French!!

Is life that bad in those countries?

Do Canadians, Japanese and the French have mental problems?

He might be able to win an award!! Let's recommend it!

Anyone that compares the gun death "rates" without taking into account population differences is obviously trying to skew the numbers. It's the same technique Michael Moore used..

It's effective because most people are too ignorant to even notice that every country doesn't have the exact same number of people!

What a joke. We all know the Academy Awards are rigged, but that was just a shame.

Last week I was having this discussion with someone about Bowling for Columbine and I pointed out some of the glaring lies and dishonesty in the movie and I said, "That movie is <B>not</B> a documentary." The person I was talking to said, "Well, it's documentary style." My reply: "So is <B>This is Spinal Tap</B>."

I reiterate the numbers I posted *exclude* suicide...

Nonetheless Michael Moore's point was in fact that the prevalence of guns is not the contributing factor. As your table shows 30% of Canadian households have a gun. He was suggesting that the media played a role with their 'if it bleeds it leads' mentality.

Japan gun murders (corrected for population): 45
United States: 9,390
UK: 112.5 (corrected)

I'll keep my guns... The French and Japanese can keep killing themselves off... and the Canadians can keep funding Michael Moore's biased films.

If you're going to get killed does it really matter to the victim if it's a knife, gun, baseball bat or 1,000 pounds of feathers? The result is the same, so stop trying to compare apples to oranges.

America is not the most dangerous country in the world and whatever country you live in isn't the safest.

America is a great country and if it wasn't we would have so many people trying to immigrate into the country.

where is your reason? even if you adjusted Canada's population there are 10x more gun murders in the United States.

All I have argued is that there are much more "gun murders" in the US than the rest of the civilised world. Do you actually dispute this?

your arguement has been consisted of...

your statistics include suicide : no they don't

USA is a big country : so is japan, UK and germany aren't so small either

you haven't adjusted for population: stats still not looking much better..

It bothers me when people use Michael Moore's Apples to Oranges comparisons to try to paint the US badly. People get out of an hour and a half of Michael Moore propaganda and suddenly they're experts on gun control?

Let's talk about:

Estonia
Hungary
Slovenia
Finland
Brazil
Denmark
Austria
Switzerland
France
Mexico
Belgium
Portugal

Why all the focus on the US? Because that's the way Michael Moore spun it.

sure there is a suicide problem in New Zealand. Perhaps if we had more guns we could solve the problem

Want me to FedEx one to you? I'll open a new bank account tomorrow and send it to you... I'll probably get an Uzi since this is my 10th account at this bank!

The most disturbing thing about this film is people like myself and my girlfriend who have never been to america now think you all 'Pack' guns 24/7

Another thing which we were unable to understand were the members of the gun club who were kitted out better than some armies and walking around the country side like they were at war?

Something else which shocked us was how they went into a store and purchased like 3 bags of bullets not differently to me buying fruit.

So can anyone well tell me if K Mart did stop selling bullets as a result of the movie?

I'll send you a few Psychology books as well so you can get that suicide rate down below the US so you have some room to talk. ;)

K Mart is pretty much out of business.. Not because of the movie, but because of their shitty products and shitty image.

All the people here that loved the "documentary" should really go and read http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html

Very informative and EVERYTHING stated is linked to facts from all over the web.

That's what Michael Moore wanted you to think, so it must be true. ;)

I've lived in the US my whole life and I've never been shot... I got into a few gun fights when I was younger but luckily I got out unscathed.

Last time I went to the dentist I was given a 9mm pistol with my cleaning.

LOL, don't you remember when we got into the grenade throwing battle in Orlando, FL?

We went out to eat with Bill, Greg, Daniel! It was close, good thing we didn't step on any land mines on the way out.
