Other than going to different pages, what does it do? Why do people run software like this?

used to be they used them to run up $$$ on PPC sponsors its also the reason why most PPC sponsors now only count second page uniques

A bot can do whatever it's been programmed to do.

There is a war on between people that write bots and those that write scripts that bots might could take advantage of. The heights of sophistication that has been reached on both sides is mind-boggling. Just know that you are at a disadvantage if you enter either side of the issue without a LOT of background study...
