You sell porn? Integrity = 0

Had a big argument with my father tonite about integrity. He is insistant that ONE day this business will come back to haunt me. And will bite me in the ass, when I need something the most.

He is absolutely positive that what I am doing is immoral and wrong - and that someone some day will find out and will do some damage to my reputation.

Did you guys all go through the same conversations?

Also - he was really nice... in regards to Sponsors:

Quote:
They have it all figured out you know. You spend 20 hours a week on it, you SHOULD be making $400 a month on it. You watch, after 2 months you'll make the equivilant of $1 an hour. So what are you doing? You're just making them all the money so they can screw you out of it later

Makes you think of course because he's your dad. But at the same time I have to disagree.

Actually - looking here for what you have experienced.

Yes, he is ALL about working for a company with "integrity" and making a living by working your ass off for some mega corporation.

Sure, there is "potential" but do we mistake that for the thought of "easy money"?

Makes me think. Seriously.

My mom found my CollegeSucks.com site about month ago. I had to lie about it and say it wasn't mine -lol- just so I wouldn't hear shit.

I do the site because its fun and there are people out there who like it. Only in the US do people have this fucking morals that seeing a pic of a nude girl is bad. Please!

I remeber a conversation I had with my Dad back in 83 or 84. He told me to go out and get a real job. I told him I had made over $150K that year and asked him where would I find such a job?

He did not have an answer for me.

It sounds like your Dad knows more about this industry than he is letting on. You want to do it, go for it. It is not easy but if you can do it the rewards are here.

He knows nothing about the porn industry. What he knows is if it is easy... it's wrong. Which makes sense.

I am listening to him. Don't get me wrong.

But the guy cheated on my mom - and then wants to teach me about integrity. So I have to come to GFY for second opinion.

Good point. He doesn't have room to talk to you about integrity.

If that doesn't work.. just make fun of him for being Canadian! lol

It makes me think that you should know a lot of teen traffic does pretty well promoting BarelyEvil.com

Seriously, that whole mega-corp employer thing is a lie. They tell you to get good grades so you can get into a good school, so you can get a good job and a good life. The coporation expects you to have total loyalty, but it will sack you without notice if it feels vaguely short some week, it will squander your 401k without concern, it will promote based on your color and gender and faked religious decency and family background and who you suck up to and whose work you can steal credit for because there is rarely enough time to climb the corporate ladder and get actual work done at the same time. Then, if you are lucky, you get forced retirement when you've got 30 years yet to live.

Integrity is within you. There is nothing about this business which is intrinsically lacking in integrity. You just have to do the right thing so you can look yourself in the mirror. Do not accept other people's judgements; make your own.

There was a time when people believed that you could work for a good company your whole life and it would take care of you. It was only sorta true then and it is utterly not true for our generation.

He's not right. A lot of people in the business have built businesses that generate his annual salary in a month.. The top companies do his salary in a day.

Sure money isn't everything.... but, it sure beats managing a store for the rest of your life.

Have some nuts, be an entrepreneur while you're still young and can afford to fall on your face a few times.

You can get a job at a grocery store anytime you want.

Im about to go through the same issues with my father. My mother and brother know but my father doesn't yet.

He once said he would disown me (and he ment it) if I was working in the porn industry.
I think it's more of an issue for him if someone asks him what I do for a living, or if he's friends found out what I do they would take t back to him.

Live your own life dude. Do what you want to do, just make sure you enjoy what you do and its making you some money.

heh... he argues that you're promoting a sponsor that's making all the money, and you're making crap?

what about his corporate job? does he have any idea how much the company makes on what he does?

it wouldn't be wise for a company to hire someone to do their bidding if the company wasn't making exponentially more than they were paying their employees.

I don't want to be associated with this biz forever, but it goes along with the artist gig... lots of famous artists and writers have been associated with the "underworld" hehe... it'll just add to my mystique... besides what I have learned here is priceless. You sure as hell can't run for president... but I think most men can respect what we do in this age...

But let's say you're trying to live a more "respectable" life... anyone that can't forgive your past is not worth your time... but I'd warn you that this biz is like a vortex... especially when you are working on the PC all day -- your social interactions are affected...

I can't explain it entirely but you communicate with people on a different wavelength after being in this shit as long as I have... staring at the screen -- you have a different phenomenological relationship with people based on the techology... but this is the future... evolution -- whatever. Don't look back -- imagine the future.

I can't even imagine working in an office anymore... dealing with people face-to-face? LOL I have a hard enough time responding to ICQ's...

I'm pushing ahead into new areas but I've got a long way to go in terms of biz connections on this new areas... I have no regrets -- but it's easy to forget there's a whole world out there to explore after you get stuck in a pattern.

Sometimes the companies can and do say gfy and don't pay you. But megacorps in non-adult arenas do the same thing. Your only protection is really savings/equity and a good legal team. You can take a look at Enron for an example of a recent nice "respectable" employer that really did not do too well for a lot of people.

I think it is both.. People think 'what could be easier that sitting at home building porn sites? I could possibly make a fortune.'

Your Dad is right, main stream culture looks down on porn in a major way. If you ever want certain jobs, like public office, etc, this could come back to haunt you.

If you want to do the straight life sometime in the future, it's certainly possible that working in porn will come back to haunt you.

Porn is best for people who are already out of the sraight life, and who don't ever want to do the straight life again.

Funny... a relative of mine lent me some money to launch my site and I paid him back in a few months plus interest - he now sees this as a biz not pleasure.

My mother and father are actually pretty proud of me.. they brag about the shit to some people, My dad works for a pretty successful software company, and my mother is a manager of a retail store, So far most of my family is pretty open to what I do.. I make a good living, and I take care of myself and my wife, thats all that matters really...

Okay I'll toss in my two cents...here....

My father is not happy with what I do and he does everything he can in his own subtle way to undermine my confidence in my abilities etc.

My mother on the other hand before she died made sure to let me know on a number of occassions how proud she was of me.

Now regarding your future career if you should choose to leave the porn industry.

The simple fact is....YES this can haunt you.

This is not a business to be taken lightly. Sorry, but all of these college kids who do this at nights and on the weekends only to make some cash so when they graduate they can get a "real" job could very well end up regretting every establishing a single site.

Alot of big companies do intensive background checks into applicants. Chances are you can forget about a political career, or working in any government funded job that requires some type of security clearance.

I'm 37, I'm not worried about my future...LOL...I'm just a little over a decade away from being "washed up."

Washed up is that age where they no longer want to pay qualified workers a good income because they can easily grab some snot nosed college grads who will do the same job half the amount.

So my plan is to build a strong foundation on what I have here so I don't have to worry so much about that.

Anyway, good luck on whatever you decide.

My dad threatened to disown me because of this business. I told him to shove it We're friends again now.

My mom, on the other hand, has asked me to teach her about the business, and wants to work for me if I ever need employees

I showed up with a brand new sportscar to my parents place one day. After that, they totally respected what I do moneywise. Not that they really tell their friends what I do...

I used to do federal contract work and a lot of my friends still do. It is not a problem for getting a security clearance if you have worked in adult. So long as you come clean about it. If you have secrets, you can be blackmailed and Uncle Sam will not want you then.

If you're making a lot of cash now enough to retire on or invest in something else - fine, but if is this was just a way to make some quick easy cash, think about what your dad is saying.

Things do a have a habit of coming back and biting you in the ass. A political or teaching career would be out. What eroswebmaster said was spot on, 'background checks' dig up all kinds of info. I don't know how old you, marriage status etc, so this might not bother you anyways.
