Brazilian rocket explodes: 21 dead

BRASILIA, Brazil, Aug. 22 ? A rocket undergoing final pre-launch tests exploded on its launch pad Friday when an engine ignited prematurely, killing at least 21 people and destroying two small research satellites, Brazil?s Defense Ministry said.

The blast came as technicians were putting the finishing touches on a launch that would make Brazil the first Latin American nation to put a rocket in space. Rockets launched by Brazil in 1997 and 1999 were destroyed shortly after liftoff because of technical problems.

no doubt...

I'm sure this will set them back considerably. Especially since 21 of their techs are now dead. Rocket engineers I'm fairly sure, don't exactly grow on trees.

Agree... it ain't just "third world countries" that need to do this.

BTW.. Brazil is "varied" in many ways... eg.. it has one of the best electoral systems in the world. Even US folks admitted it would take them at least eight years to get near a comparable system.

I saw a documentary about the space race that showed some pretty disturbing footage of russian engineers running away from a rocket that had just exploded. They were on fire themselves. I think the final death toll was 151. Someone high up was pushing for time so they had bypassed several safety systems in order to be ready for launch sooner. Those men paid for that arrogant impatience with their lives.

On October 24, 1960 the Soviet Premier, Nikita S. Khrushchev was boiling mad. Two launches to Mars on the 13th and 15th of October had failed while he was preparing to make a big propaganda speech at the United Nations bragging once again about the superiority of the Communist system. His appointed lackey, Field Marshal Nedelin, was told to launch a vehicle to Mars, or else. When the countdown reached zero, the huge SS-6 rocket did not ignite. Feeling the pressure from Khrushchev, Nedelin disobeyed all safety regulations concerning rocket misfires and sent the technicians out to work on the rocket. Korolev was extremely safety conscious and he argued with Nedelin about sending the engineers out to accomplish maintenance on the unstable space vehicle. In an action of bravado, Nedelin took his entire staff and some chairs to sit by the rocket as it was being inspected by the technicians. Korolev and a deputy Yangel went into a blast shelter to have a cigarette when the rocket exploded. Instantly, Nedelin, his staff, their chairs, and over 100 technicians on the rocket were incinerated in the worst accident in the history of the Soviet space program. Rather than admitting that such an event occurred, the Soviet Press claimed that Nedelin was killed in an aircraft accident. About once every month after the accident, three or four space technicians would have their obituaries in the press; it took thirty months for all the Nedelin disaster technicians to be officially recognized as dead. Such was the secrecy of the Soviet space program in the early years. At the Tyuratam Rocket Launch Facility there is now an obelisk with the names of the scientists and technicians who perished in "The Nedelin Disaster".

Quite true, the US & other countries should also take care of there own before wasting billions on sending shit to mars. I understand defence shield and stuff like that, but not stupid mars projects or moon projects. We will never go live on mars so why bother exploring it with radio controled cars.

Electrical system? the US has got to have the worst in the world so thats not saying much.

Why bother exploring it? Do you have any idea the number of everyday things that you use that have come from our exploration of space over the last 50 or so years or the things that may be discovered over the nex 50 years?

As far as living on the moon or in space, probably not in your life time or mine but one day. Who's to say what we will accomplish given enough time and imagination. There were people 50 years ago that said we could never fly, never break the sound barrier, never orbit the earth, and never travel to the moon. Good thing there are more enlightend people in charge of things like this than you.

Yes exploring space sure we have microwaves and velcro and a few other cool things, but half of those would of been invented anyways. Sure exploring space is fine but spending money to goto mars is a waste of time.

More enlighten? Geeez man don't you see the world is we are on is so screwed up the money would be better spent making our world a better place than maybe one day planning a future colony on Mars? The fact that half the world doesn't have 1 decent meal a day should worry us a bit more than some stupid space program.

I'm not against the space program, its great when they have money for it, but when the health system is fucked and people can't even get into public hospitials cause they spent all the money on space travel I think thats fucked.

Go watch redplanet that will give you a good idea of our chances on living on mars and what good it would be wasting billions more going there!

Do you honestly think that satellite tv would be here if NASA didn't exist? You must be on crack! What they have discovered and come up with is incredible.. You can not put value to that.

Great thoughts and would be a beautiful thing if it was possible but you know is i mpossible to *fix* our world...if it was not take care of from the begining now is gonna me impossible to fix.

I do not think that money is take away from hospitals.. and isn't the US health system the best in the world? Yet we have all the money you want.. still our health system sucks dirty herpes infected cock!

The U.S. hasn't lost a man IN space just upper atmosphere i.e. the shuttle explosions.

We've lost far more on the ground and in the air. Probably more on the ground.

Volatile propellants and cost cutting as well as simple oversights, mismanagement, pressure and sabotage are the factors here.

Overcoming the challenges of a hostile environment allows us to better utilize those new discoveries in our own environments.

Sailing the seas, fighting the jungles, surviving the arctic, underwater exploration, desert survival tactics all bring about new technologies, tactics, materials that we can use in our daily lives.

The fact we've got an internet and multiple communications systems is a direct result of facing these challenges.

We've got a long way to go it SEEMS, but the biggest challenge isn't space, it's ourselves and the mechanics of the mind.

When those problems are solved, we may well see Star Trek stuff in a short time.

Before some of you knock the US spending on the space programs, why don't you bitch about the billions of dollars wasted on 3rd world countries, and what about my own country, Puerto Rico, 18.5 billion dollars this year. Ask our political jackass parties where that money went this year. I hear we closed a few more schools do to asbestos and no money to clean them up.

And about the billions of dollars we forgive in loans as well. Compared to that waste, we aren't spending that much on space exploration.

And as far as helping the poor, shit, this is so fucking over rated. You know what the poor people do with that few extra bucks? What they do with their own hard earned money. Piss it away drinking and on cheap whores.

I'm poor but I am in a dying minority in my village. I'm an elitist for being responsible.
