If your success peaks, you won't live long
One would think that attaining success at a young age would facilitate their journey to the top. However, a recent study suggests that people who succeed at a relatively young age may have shorter life spans because of the stress associated with early achievements. The study examined U.S. governors, U.S. presidents, Canadian prime ministers and Nobel laureates, but went on to conclude that the trend was applicable to businesspeople as well.

The purpose of this article is twofold: 1- It is one thing to be successful in life, it is another to peak (accomplish your greatest achievement) early. Thus, I will try to help you figure out what you can do to avoid doing so. 2- Once you are successful, what do you need to do to avoid burnout? what drives you? Not everyone strives to achieve success, accumulate wealth or secure power. Many have to succeed because they need to provide for others or simply want to attain a certain level of comfort. As a result, they may make sacrifices early on and end up accumulating accolades. With time, they may find themselves in certain positions of power. In this case, while they never asked for it, they wield considerable authority. Usually this type of guy ranks family and home as higher priorities than professional success. Thus, he tends to balance matters quite well and avoid an early downfall. Others may not care much for the material accumulation, but prize being in positions of authority and seek the respect of others. Thus they pursue projects in order to attain those goals. They accept and welcome the wealth that comes with the territory, but it is the accomplishments that they pursue. The problem is that this type does not know where to stop. Nothing is unattainable. This is when it can get dangerous because the sky becomes the limit and no goals seem out of reach. How much you are willing to stretch yourself out may lead to your downfall. This is the category of persons that this article will address. Maintain balance and you'll never trip up... Balance is key There is an old Chinese principle that emphasizes the need for balance in life in order to avoid disease. This principle of the Yin Yang stresses that the universe needs to be in equilibrium, otherwise, things will become unhealthy. The problem is that young professionals who work hard tend to use this as a reason to play harder. The problem is that a lifetime of alcohol, women and drugs is probably not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. So while burning the candle at both ends may help you balance some aspects of your life, it will destroy your health. Thus, this is not a real solution. So, how do you avoid peaking early and burning out? Do not get comfortable Always set your sights on new goals. Oftentimes, we tend to get complacent with our past accomplishments and let them get to our heads. Ideally, you should set new goals for your existing job and perpetually improve your delivery. But there will be a time when you feel that you are running on cruise control. At this juncture, if you do not take on new challenges -- be it at that role or on complementary ones -- then you will peak. Build on your lead Keep in mind that life is a marathon, not a dash. Moreover, the track is oval. Thus, you have to take it one lap at a time and try to beat everyone lap by lap. If you build a big enough lead, then you can focus on new projects, avoid peaking and build your empire. Look ahead Many people are too busy sitting on their previous accomplishments and resting on their laurels. Even if people think that you too are focusing on your past, look straight ahead and charge your way through new frontiers. Learn from others You may be very good at some things, but others will be better than you at other things. The key is to take a cue from them. Always remember that if you want to be appreciated for what you do well, then you need to return the appreciation when others excel at something. Sweat it out, boy There is no greater feeling that being anxious about something new. If you are no longer nervous or excited about anything, you will slow down. Because athletes undergo physical training given the nature of their profession, they probably won't burn out like businessmen because they will offset the professional and psychological strain with physical tests. Unfortunately, businessmen tend to focus mainly on professional goals, and tend to lead unhealthy lives when they get older, which explains why the study's findings suggest that an early rise leads to an early grave. That said, I strongly urge you to exercise. live long, live well In the end, previous performance does not guarantee future success... so if you want to ensure a healthy and endless rise to the top, understand that it takes time to find balance in your life. |
