Suggested locations in San Fernando Valley?
OK, this is a serious post.. I honestly would appreciate at least a couple serious responses just for once.
I'm looking to move to San Fernando Valley within the next 6 - 8 months. Anyone (who's already in the area) have any good location suggestions for both a home and for a decent sized studio in a decent area? Price isn't really as big of an issue as quality and location. Thanks! |

you can get a studio in chatsworth or n. hollywood for a decent amount.. for living.. you want something nice.. studio city, sherman oaks, encino, tarzana, west hills, woodland hills, porter ranch, or anything south of ventura blvd.. you could go to simi, but eh. kinda trashy..

Studio City, south of the boulevard, ideally in the hills if you can afford it.

Calabasas has beautiful homes with gorgeous panoramic views of the entire San Fernando Valley. This was my last home when I lived out there.
Also extra nice are Hidden Hills, Encino, and Sherman Oaks. Locate your studio mid valley so its convenient for models to get to. I had mine set up in Van Nuys.

Forgot to mention, if you go a little further out Westlake Village is also really nice and a bit more tranquil.

Westlake Village is extremely pricy. Just to rent a bedroom from someone will run you about $600.
If you go about 10 minutes further, you can find some decent prices in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park. Boring towns, but very peaceful. If you work regular hours, then you'll hate the drive on the 101 towards the valley. Sometimes, it takes an hour.

Ok thanks for all the tips folks.
So, stay away from Van Nuys then? I guess I'm getting conflicting suggestions regarding Van Nuys. Yes or No for getting a studio there? If no, where else is good? By the way, that is one insanely nice house, KRL. What made you move? |

Why would anyone want to live in the Valley? It is hot, smoggy, capital of carjacks, ugly, porn capital, freeway hell, and spider heaven! Ask Anthony and Dig about the valley. They moved south to the beach to get away from the glaring sun and morons.

Much easier to find models there. At least, that's the impression I've been getting after talking with lots of people. Plus, Tucson is a dump. |

westsiderentals.com is the place to look, many listings have pics.
it's about 60 bucks for 2 or 3 months. Good places: Studio City (woodsy, close to everything) Sherman Oaks (right next to Studio City) Bad places: Van Nuys (linked to Valley Village) N. Hollywood (crappy & crime riddled) Northridge (dumb college kids everywhere) Burbank (cop central) |

January 17, 1994 at 4:30AM. We were just a few miles from the epicenter of that huge Northridge earthquake. I'd been in quakes before but that mother fucker scared the shit out of me. In addition to totally fucking up our gorgeous house, the studio where I had been doing some video editing had the second floor collapse on the first floor, so had the quake come a few days earlier I wouldn't be here writing this post. We were having our first child that year and after going through the main quake and the big aftershock that hit again after we had just had the contractors fixing things and all the cracks opened again and the hundreds of minor aftershocks, I just couldn't deal with it anymore. When they said this wasn't the big one that will eventually nail the LA and Valley one day, I said fuck it time to go back East, not going to go through this nightmare ever again. I had lived in California for 16 years and it wasn't like the way things were when I moved there when I was 20 in 1978. You had the riots, crowded freeways all the time, polluted as fuck air, too many people in too small a space of a thousand different nationalities, fires, ridiculous costs of living, etc. Florida was the best place that had the California lifestyle and warm weather year round without as much of the downside factors and a lot less crowded. The house was eventually all fixed up and its still in the family. We tried selling it after the quake, but the minute you disclose prior major earthquake damage nobody wanted to pay top dollar, so we just kept it and moved.

KRL, I forgot about earthquakes. 94 was a bad one. The good thing about it was my neighbor from hell became so scared that he moved his family away two days after the quake. I celebrated. It wasn't a joyous occasion for my friends who were injured and lost their homes. However, my aunt who lives in Indiana has gone through two lightning strikes on her home, one major flooding, and a tornado that knocked her house off its foundation and tore the roof off this past year. Whatz ya gonna do!! Stay here and hope a quake doesn't hit you, or live in the midwest and pray there are no dark funnel clouds coming your way! Fire season came early this year in Calif. I'm more concerned about fires than earthquakes.
