http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvd.htm
DVD-R and DVD-RW DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players. DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 90% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 73% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10). DVD+R and DVD+RW DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing. DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 85% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 73% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10). My DVD recorder and DVD burner do -R. |

Just get the Sony burner that does both +- and you won't need to worry. I think pioneer also has a dual format burner now too but I've never heard anyone complain about the Sony one.
The + and - media are coming down to where soon I think the media will be equal in price. Wonder when a 8x or 16x burner will be out, or are they planning to stall until the 20gig burners are available? |

It's not the fastest drive around, but it does a HEAP of formats: CD-R 12X write CD-RW 8X write CD-ROM 32X read DVD-RAM 2X write DVD-R 1X/2X write DVD-RW 1X write DVD-ROM 10X read DVD-RAM is a packet based format, which means that to the computer it's just like a slow HD. You can even format it to an NTFS or FAT32 file system, or use the default UDF2 file system. The DVD-RAM format is also used in consumer DVD recorders, since it's a random access format you can be recording on one part of the disc, and play back from another (simultaneously). DVD-RAM uses a different disc and laser so the drive needs to be able to support it. Most DVD-ROM drives don't, which is why I ended up getting the LG burner. |

One more thing, a 9.4Gb DVD+-R/RW/RAM is a double sided disc. On both my consumer DVD recorder and the PC burner, you need to flip the disc manually to make use of the full capacity.
