    help! email server problems!

since i switched over to cable, i can't send email. it keeps returning as "relaying denied". i called the cable company to confirm the outgoing mail servers (smtp), and those are correct. when i test settings, it does everything fine until it actually sends the message, then it dies (it seems to find smtp just fine).

    any ideas?

Most likely an IP change when you changed providers which is no longer on the access list.

    Take Luck!

no, not using my own mail server. i'm trying to use the cable co's smtp server to send mail. i can recieve everything just fine, just can't retrieve.

i'm *thinking* about setting up a mail server if i can't get this fixed before long though...

Is the email you're sending "from" the email address the cable company supplied you with or from a different domain?

Are you able to sucessfully send email to your cable company email address?

Also, before you go to the touble of setting up a mail server, make sure your cable company isn't blocking outgoing smtp connections to mail servers other than their own. Several ISPs do that as a means of limiting spam originating on their networks.

i haven't tried that email... never used to have to use it, i think i know what it is, i'll try that.

edit: eh, that doesn't work either. should have known, anyways. i'm actually signed up with earthlink, but the service goes through time warner, and i'm trying to use the mail server there. i doubt i can use any other mail server, generally most isps make you use their mail server on their network.

You don't know what relaying denied means, you don't know how to log into an SMTP server with an email client and you're *thinking* of setting up a mail server.
