Not sure what it is for, but I know you have to turn it off in php.ini on the server

Safe mode was especially for earlier versions crucial. Nowadays safe mode turned off can still be a security leak but it's by far not as dangerous anymore as it used to be... depending on your configuration you may be able to disable safe mode with .htaccess (or how did that work again?)

Disable it in your php.ini
You can also add a directive for your virtual host in its httpd config file. |
