Just get a little honda generator. Be sure to put in the right oils gas etc before you fire it up.

You need to add up all the stuff you want to run and get one that is sized appropriately.

I have a 5KW one. That translates to a 40 amp breaker, not enough to run a home AC and a bunch of other stuff, but it does allow me to run oil heat, some lights, an oven burner, TV, refrigerator, sump pump, computer etc. during a winter blackout.

Figure a standard home breaker is 200 amps or about 50 kw. 25KW should be plenty for an emergency generator unless you have like 15,000 square feet or something, or absolutely must run your dryer, A/C, etc all at the same time.

I'm looking for a "big one" now. Premium features are diesel, automatic transfer, and an automatic weekly exercise cycle that tests everything. Here is a real sweet one I am thinking of bidding on:

But in general, you'll probably be advised not to seek electrical advice on gfy....

Search ebay for sniper, bid sniper, sniper software.. pick one & use that. Never bid on stuff.... just 'snipe' it at the end. If it's worth $8000 to you, put that in at the end, 2 seconds before the close & then you avoid all the bidding wars.

You need a professional to come and see what you need.

I have a small generator that will keep small appliances on for 5-6 hours per fill up (it uses gasoline). I don't have it connected to my circuit board, because I want to put a whole house auto on generator on. My small one would NOT run the AC.

If you have propane or natural gas, you should be able to get whole house one installed. I don't THINK you can get a gasoline whole house, but I could be wrong.

I keep about 20 gal of gas around in case of an outage.

Also if you get a small generator, you need to make sure you keep it outside when it's running - and they're VERY loud.

Living in the woods had made me a little too familiar with power outages and alternate options.

I totally agree on diesel. Gas has explosive fumes, can be a bad scene. Gas also doesn't store long term very well.

don't forget you'll also need an electrician to hook you up with a high amperage throw switch that will disconnect your home from the grid or you'll electrify the telephone poles and electrocute the linemen who are trying to restore power. That kind of thing pisses them off.

spend some money and do it right.
