The broader law at issue now requires that operators of commercial Internet sites use credit cards or some form of adults-only screening system to ensure children cannot see material deemed harmful to them.

Didn't some people wind up with the FTC at their door for doing this?

"We only need your credit card for age verification purposes! Your credit card will not be charged! Really... we promise "

Now the gov wants to flip-flop around and say that it is a valid form of age verification?

They better assign different algos for minors with cards then.

I thought the credit cards said they didn't want to be used as a form of adult verification?

wtf?

You don't need to be 18 to get a credit card or a Visa debit card, so it's not exactly a perfect solution.

Olson said the main target was commercial pornographers who use sexually explicit "teasers" to lure customers.

At what point in time did it become okay for children to run wild unsupervised on the Internet? This is like giving your kid a bus ticket to Times Square in NYC.

I'm not worried about children being exposed to porn. I'm worried about children being picked up by dirty old men.

Instead of making laws against us, they should outlaw children from the Internet. Or better yet, make a Internet for children only.

I agree you would let your children watch late night TV without supervision why not sit down and supervise your kids when on the net

Unlike you or me or anyone on this board most parents would get owned on a "puter" by their kids.

Or maybe I should restate that as anyone that is irresponisble enough to let their kids run wild on the net would get owned by their kids on the net.

The fed's actions lately are unsettling to put it mildly. They forum shopped their obscenity case to the backwoods of Penn, they have all these prosecutors at the DOJ funded for the sole purpose of hitting the adult market and now they are back trying to take their umpteenth bite at the the COPA apple. Election year is almost upon us and I have to believe that there will be higher pressure put on the DOJ by the Bush adminstration to get some headlines in the prosecution of porn.

Like that's going to happen. That would make parents be responsible for the activities of their children.....that would make parents accountable...

We can't have that.

obviously parents arent 100% accountable for their kids actions, but its pretty damn close.

if you raise your kids with a solid foundation, at least they make educated decisions, albeit stupid at times. i can't stand these fucking whiny parents.

the mistakes i made in life weren't as a result of my upbringing or general ignorance - i was fully aware of the consequences when i fucked up.

besides, it seems americans are the only ones that really give a shit about this anyway. even canada has tit shots on broadcast television.

What a bunch of imbeciles!

Before buying a computer or internet connection parent should past a test (like a driving test) to ensure that they know the basic about computers and internet and they can install parental supervision software... that will block certain site but will also tell the parent the list of sites the kid visited... without the kid being able to erase his track....

as for those that already have a computer or internet connection... each internet provider should contact each members... see if they are parents.. and if so... charge them like $10-$15 for a tech guy to come to the house, help them and make them pass the test... If the parents refuse... no connection for you! OR what about a test they could do on the internet after learning about what they need to do... Contact by tel. the internet provider... they give the parent a password... and they do the test....

Because lets face it, without parental supervision, kids/teen will just go to non-us porn sites... still go to questionable chatrooms.. etc...
