Are other superpowers plotting against the USA?

With all the crazy stuff going on in the world, and the bold (and aggressive) moves our country has been making towards other countries (justified or not) --- do you think other superpowers are currently plotting against us?

I myself freak out about this sometimes when we do aggressive moves.... like sidestepping the UN and stuff.

I don't think that other superpowers are looking for a way to gather against US.. There is just no point. What would it change? This world is about business, and war sucks.. It seems that only US has armed confilcts lately with their "imaginary" foreign threats

Not intentionally or blatantly but effectively, yes.

Consider the case of US soft power. During the Cold War much of the world thought very highly of the US. It was seen as a balance to Soviet power. With the decline and fall of the USSR, there was an immediate power void. The US sat alone in the world power game. During the 1990s, attitudes towards the US began to fall. You can find quite a few articles and papers from that time period outlining rising anti-Americanism in the world.

An interesting case in point is attitudes towards the United Nations. The United Nations is a organization that is hugely tilted towards the great powers. No Security Council resolution can pass without US approval (nor France, China, Russia, or UK). No Security Council resolution can pass against the US. Despite the obviousness of this people around the world are looking more favorably at the UN than previously.

The concept of "international law" is certainly rising very quickly and is a soft-power concept that many in the world will advance to balance US power.

The EU is a powerful player with powerful economic clout that balances US economic power. Will be interesting to see if the EU ever militarizes. There are certainly some people interested in that.

Wouldn't you say it's the same as it always has been? Business as usual. Take a look at the 20th century conflicts the US has been involved in. Nothing has changed. A few wars, a few conflicts, a few peace-keeping missions. This was the history of 20th century America.

There are very few countries in the world that CAN project their power easily anywhere in the world. I think it is not a coincidence that the countries that can do. The US and UK have almost all of the carrier groups in the world. Those were the powers in Iraq.

There are no other super powers. The U.S. is the sole remaining titan.

He is correct with that comment.

Unless the EU starts investing heavily in a EU army, there will only be one real superpower in this world.... the United States.

The U.S. is referred to in the press as the last remaining super power all the time. I'm not saying that they are the only country with power or that they have absolute power. But, they are the only real super power left.

Rather than laugh why don't you tell us all what other country could be called a super power?

But the point of the question really is: is another international superpower building?

And The answer is, YES.

Will the kill USA?

I hope not.

Once USA elect a better government they should be able to get back in the world's good books.

What qualifies you as a superpower anyway?

I think anyone with even a single good sized nuke and a intercontinental missle is someone to be a little worried about.

Let alone hundreds....

How many nukes did Russia have (reportedly) during the peak of the cold war?

I agree. Western Europe is the next super power and within 20 years time will be more powerful than the U.S. But right now there is only one.

The reason there is so much of a gap between the US and other nations militarily is partly because Japan hasn't militarized. The world's second largest economy is essentially only playing on the economics side of the gameboard and not the military side.

While Japan can't equal the US in military expenditures without spending 2.5 times what the US does relative to the size of it's economy it could tip the table a little especially in Asia.

However Japan is one of the greatest allies of the US and the US maintains a considerable military presence there anyway.

Economically, after Japan the next country is Germany. The German economy is less than 5x smaller than the US economy though. The US has many troops in Germany too.

Only the EU could be considered an economical superpower.
No other countries come even CLOSE to the economical power of the US.

No army on earth, of the same size, is as technologically advanced and spend as much money on their military force as the US.

Err I'm thinking about them.... that's who I'm worried about.

China & Russia possibly plotting against us.

But what do I know?... I have no idea about international politics.

I seriosly doubt that.
I live and work in Eastern Europe, (that is where according to the map http://www.prokofiev.ru/prikol/pics/p2/world.htm the commies are). This country is soon to become a part of European Union. I read the Russian newspapers, and watch Russian TV channels, trust me, there is no aggrivation here. But people do not like the Iraq conflict, because it was built like it is the Great US Mission! Turned out to be just another move of Bush's administration to gather some control over oil in the region. (And that was officially declared by some Pentagon general later, not sure if CNN even said a word about it)

I could say that I was around the world. And lived in different countries for quite some time. I could say that people are all the same in every country around the globe. Its the politicians that make us look bad. But people are the same EVERYWHERE.

Cheers!

If your country wants to be considered a superpower, yes.
Military power plays a very important role.

Right now, the EU pretty much counts on the US to provide military support.

EU military spending: aprox. 166 billion USD
US military spending: aprox. 280 billion USD (could be more since it was increased by the Bush administration.)

Note: the US is actually pressing the EU to increase their defense budget.

China hasn't been a superpower for a long while. They are working on it but have a long ways to go. Pitfalls? Currency devaluation? Political climate?

Russia. Lots of nukes. Traditional forces falling behind. US has moved very far ahead in power projection with a dozen aircaft carriers to a pretty non-functional, non-existent group in RU. The Communist Soviet Union was willing to spend a huge share of its budget on military expenditures chasing the US. During the 1970s the Soviet Union was producing twice as many aircraft and submarines as the US and more than 5x as many tanks. Transitional Russia is not anywhere near keeping up. Some say that was the final straw that broke the USSR's back. Ronald Reagan intentionally pursued such a policy of massive military expenditures in order to force bankruptcy of the Soviet System. This idea had been stated earlier by JFK.

China... we had some joke in the german army:
Why doesn´t russia invade china? because every russian tank would be attacked by 1000 chinese mechanics and disassembled.
The chinese military might not be that modern, but the manpower is incredible.

Yeah, that's a real good point. War in the Asian theater cannot be contemplated without considering that manpower. Korea and Vietnam Redux.
